The Corporate and Institutional Coverage (CIC) team, is an origination and coverage business with the Commercial Bank, operating across the UK and covering LBG's largest clients. CIC is establishing a dedicated first-class Sustainability and ESG Financing team to own the CIC Sustainability strategy and work in partnership with our clients to accelerate both the Energy Transition and their general ambition to become better companies for the future.
This team will take a lead in enabling the Bank to deliver on its dedication to reduce carbon exposure from our balance sheet by 50% by 2030, on the path to net zero by 2050 or sooner. Part of our commitment to this is through rapidly growing the funding available under our green finance initiatives from £3bn to £5bn to scale up our support for our clients committed to transition.
The newly formed team has three main priorities:
- Act as a market facing centre of excellence on topics across Environmental, Social and Governance factors. Specifically they will:
- have specialist technical capability in response to the UK’s net zero transition.
- Offer broader resource, supply chain and business model thought leadership on the challenges and opportunities facing our clients.
- Formulate internal and external ESG strategies to support colleagues and clients and drive our ambition to be market leading.
- Partner the Coverage and Product teams with ESG finance structuring capability, bringing insight and acumen to all CIC relationships with an eye to origination and income. Critically the team will also provide partnership to the sector teams when engaging with Climate Risk.
- Lead and collaborate on Sustainability related workstreams, within CIC, with the wider Commercial Bank and pan-LBG
Accountabilities:
- Lead strategic dialogue and partner the CIC sector teams to develop specific sustainability strategies relevant for that sector and on an individual basis with clients.
- Lead the successful origination and execution of the opportunities developed from client & market conversations.
- Lead research on borrowers, markets and lenders using ESG data and other information and sources to present to clients in a clear and compelling way.
- Provide clients with strategic insight and commercial solutions to develop their overall ESG / transition strategy; embedding ESG considerations into investment process and support with framework drafting and external verification; helping clients set, achieve, and maintain ESG ratings.
- Ensure detailed knowledge of main ESG rating Agencies methodologies such as Sustainalytics, Vigeo Eiris, CDP and MSCI and execute ESG ratings data collection and analysis.
- Develop productive and positive relationships with external partners in the market including advisory and legal firms, representing LBG at the highest levels at industry events and with clients as we transform our business.
- Deliver effective governance capability having confidence to challenge constructively and work with any local regulators in an open and collaborative manner. Effectively identifying, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.
- Mentor and stretch the development of others in the team.
You will bring:
- In-depth knowledge of Green & Sustainability Linked Loan Principles, Green Sustainable and Social Bond Principles, UN Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Bonds Initiative, EU Taxonomy, TCFD, and other major ESG Regulations.
- Consistent record of delivering sustainability linked or green financings.
- Existing external profile in ESG and Sustainability.
- A track record in one of these areas (i) sustainability in the built environment (ii) energy markets (iii) carbon or energy transition advisory (iv) ESG ratings or sustainable finance frameworks (v) Natural capital (vi) Social Value and Social Impact. (vii) legal and regulatory environments.
- A growth approach that is solutions focused with well cultivated business judgement and high ethical and professional standards.
- Keen ability to work collaboratively with the team whilst and guiding and mentoring others with your vast experience and knowledge of the market and ESG.
- Proven track record of coordinating multiple partners to deliver in sophisticated and evolving environments.

This role is considered Certified under the Senior Manager and Certification Regime as either requiring mandatory qualifications or being deemed as a role capable of providing ‘significant harm’ to customers. Due to this, successful candidates and will be subject to enhanced levels of vetting, and required to complete a fitness and propriety attestation on commencement in role. Colleagues performing this role will be required to be complete a fitness and propriety attestation on an annual basis and will also be subject to additional routine criminal and credit checks

This role has been identified as a Client-dealing function under SYSC 27.8.18R as defined in the FCA Handbook
The Person (“P”) performs the client-dealing FCA certification function for a firm if:

(2) those activities will involve P dealing with:
(a) a person with or for whom those activities are carried out; or
(b) the property of any such person;
in a manner substantially connected with the carrying on of regulated activities by the firm.
If you manage certified colleagues this role will be identified as Manager of certification employees under SYSC 27.8.13R as defined in the FCA Handbook
(1) The function of managing or supervising a certification employee, directly or indirectly, is an FCA-specified significant-harm function.
(2) A function in (1) is not an FCA certification function for that firm if it is performed by an SMF manager of that firm.
