“We are on a mission to transform the future of grocery retail through sustained technology innovation.”

Ocado Technology is putting the world’s retailers online using advanced artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, the cloud and IoT. We develop the innovative software and hardware systems that power Ocado.com, as well as the unique ‘Ocado Smart Platform’ which is being implemented by ambitious retailers across the world from Europe to America, Asia and beyond. With everything from websites to highly automated warehouses that we design in-house, our employees are skilled specialists with expertise across a wide range of technologies, working on cutting-edge innovations that are shaping the future of our society.

We are a fast- growing company: today we have colleagues in 7 development centre across the UK and Europe, with offices open in London, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City (UK), Krakow, Wroclaw (Poland), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Barcelona (Spain), with a satellite office in Stockholm (Sweden).

We champion a value-led culture to get our teams working at their very best and to help create a collaborative working environment with inspiring projects that our people love. Core values of Trust, Autonomy, Craftsmanship, Collaboration and Learn Fast help drive our innovative culture. But don’t just take our word for it, have a look at what our people are saying about us on Glassdoor.

What does the team do?

We are building a small, diverse, agile, highly-resourced team to push the boundaries of what’s possible in our Robotic Pick system. Our remit ranges from adding new functionality to end-effectors, iterating through design and prototype of new sensors and feedback mechanisms, and designing bespoke camera systems. We’re looking for outstanding, enthusiastic engineers to join us, at the start of what promises to be an exciting, challenging push to engineer 100% automated, completely unmanned grocery fulfillment centers.

Within the division, you’ll be working closely alongside world-leading experts in robotics and computer vision, who have already achieved results that are putting us leagues ahead of our competitors. We’re a friendly group, and any one of us will happily talk (at length) about the tech we are working on. Following our recent acquisitions of Haddington and Kindred, you’ll also be liaising with engineers from around the globe who can’t resist solving the unsolvable.

What would I be doing?

As it’s a small team, you’ll be a key voice in the development of the technology. We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate an ability to take a fast, lean, additive approach - design, print/fabricate, trial, and iterate. You’ll be responsible for taking existing hardware designs and optimising them for size, weight, strength, and manufacturability. You’ll also be called upon to design new products from scratch, with scope to think creatively about design, material selection, and functionality - you will own product development from the drawing board all the way through to testing and productionising.

In doing so, we’ll expect you to become the expert on the products you work on, and identify opportunities for improvements and products we hadn’t yet considered. A candidate successful in the role will quickly make their mark as a key member in a rapidly growing team and product portfolio.

Who are you?

You are a skilled design engineer with an unwavering attention to detail. OnShape, or alternatively SolidWorks, is your tool of choice. You’re also strongly aware of the tools and processes used to build your designs, and can demonstrate you’ve got hands-on engineering experience. Where necessary, you aren’t afraid of getting your hands dirty installing and trialling your new creations, then iterating on the design until it’s perfect. While we’re fairly light on processes, you respect them where it’s appropriate - design reviews, FMEAs, change management etc are all embedded within the team.

We'd like to hear from you if you have...

  • Degree-qualified in Engineering or Product Design, or equivalent experience gathered professionally or otherwise
  • Strong evidence of a collaborative approach to problem solving, and ability to function effectively in a team environment
  • Self-driven, and proactive in identifying and resolving issues independently
  • Proven experience in the field of automation or robotics
  • Demonstrable experience in rapid prototyping or fabrication
  • Experience in mentoring and guiding junior engineers
  • Design for manufacture and assembly
  • Full product lifecycle support, from concept development to implementation, including high-volume manufacture
  • CAD design experience in SolidWorks

Bonus points if you have...

  • Masters/phD qualification
  • Experience in configuring, running, and interpreting FEA in SolidWorks/COMSOL/other
  • Skilled in use of OnShape
