Description

About The Role

We are looking for an experienced Data Journalist with a passion for interactive storytelling to take The Telegraph’s award-winning financial journalism to the next level.

Working closely with personal finance, data and visual editors, you will take on a new role focused on finding innovative ways to tell the latest stories about money, business and the economy. You will use data, code and visuals to deepen our readers’ understanding of the key issues affecting their finances, whether it be the latest government Budget, surging inflation or a housing market crash.

You will pitch, research, build and write engaging interactive pieces that lie at the intersection of financial and data journalism. One week you could be working on a calculator, offering readers a personalised look at how they will be hit by changes to taxation. Another week you might examine data on high street bank closures, mapping where people are most financially isolated. Or you might work on a scrollytelling project that walks readers through the epidemic of financial frauds and scams.

The position requires a highly organised, self-starting individual who has both the sharp editorial sense of a seasoned reporter, as well as the deep passion for innovation of a technologist. You should ideally have strong copywriting, data analysis and programming skills – but moreover you should possess a willingness to learn new skills and techniques to expand the kinds of stories you can tell.

Responsibilities:

  • Delivering innovative data-led or interactive-led financial journalism
  • Collaborating closely with The Telegraph’s personal finance, data and visual desks to understand editorial priorities and develop ideas
  • Identifying and analysing key datasets to generate exclusives
  • Developing bespoke tools, calculators and lookups that give readers a personalised view on their finances
  • Maintaining a collection of evergreen pieces that offer readers’ insight any time of year
  • Staying abreast of the key trends affecting readers’ personal finances and the economy
  • Working with graphics and designs teams to create cutting-edge visuals, interactives and user experiences

Skills and experience

  • A proven track record of telling stories with data or interactives in a compelling way
  • A passion for financial journalism, personal finance and the economy
  • Data analysis and visualisation skills, ideally based in a programming language such as Python or R
  • Experience working with web-based technologies such as Javascript, HTML, and CSS
  • An ability to write clear and accurate copy, particularly with regards to explaining financial or statistical concepts
  • An understanding of modern development practices, including the use of version control systems such as Git
  • Experience working with backend systems, including the use of cloud computing platforms such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform
