Description

About The Role

We are looking for an experienced web developer with a passion for interactive storytelling to help take The Telegraph’s award-winning financial journalism to the next level.

Working closely with our personal finance, data and editorial development teams, you will be building interactive tools and web apps that deepen our readers’ understanding of the key issues affecting their finances. You will use your frontend development skills to tell the latest stories about money, business and the economy, whether it be the latest government Budget, surging inflation or a housing market crash.

One week you could be working on a calculator, offering readers a personalised look at how their income will be hit by changes to taxation. Another week you could be building a pensions portal that brings together all of our financial guides and tools. Or you might work on a scrollytelling project that walks readers through the data on financial frauds and scams.

The position requires a highly organised, self-starting individual who enjoys coding creatively. You should have strong frontend development skills and experience working with both vanilla JavaScript and frameworks such as React or Svelte. You should be comfortable working with APIs and cloud computing platforms to power your interactives with data.

This is a 5-days-a-week contract position, initially for a period of three months, with a possibility of extension.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing bespoke tools, calculators and lookups that give readers a personalised view on their finances
  • Collaborating closely with The Telegraph’s personal finance, data and visual desks to understand editorial priorities and develop ideas
  • Working with graphics and designs teams to create cutting-edge visuals, interactives and user experiences
  • Staying abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends

Skills and experience

  • A proven track record of developing interactives that tell stories in a compelling way
  • Frontend developments skills, including working in vanilla JavaScript and also with frameworks such as Svelte or React
  • Experience working with backend systems, including the use of cloud computing platforms such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platforms
  • Experience with databases such as SQL and MongoDB
  • Knowledge of data engineering and ETL pipelines
  • An understanding of modern development practices and patterns, including the use of version control systems such as Git
