Description of role:
TWI’s Advanced Composites and Adhesives (ACA) section provides research, development and consultancy services in composites processing, joining and characterisation technologies. ACA is expanding its capabilities and offerings in the O&G industry. Due to recent growth in the business, and in order to be able to sustain the level of support required by industry, we are seeking a candidate with expertise and experience in fibre reinforced polymer composite pipes, tanks, pressure vessels and connectors to drive the activities required to support our expanding market share.
The successful candidate will enjoy working with the ACA team and the Non-Metallic Innovation Centre (NIC, https://www.non-metallic.com/) in developing solutions in composites pipes and connectors design, joining, testing, failure investigation etc. You will strengthen the core skills of an exciting and innovative team by taking on responsibilities mainly on preparation of proposals, writing and presenting project reports and also conducting and overlooking laboratory experiments.
The applicant is expected to hold a minimum of a first degree in a Materials or Mechanical subject, or a related engineering discipline, and have practical experience in composite pipe design, joining/manufacturing and characterisation technologies. Previous experience in business development and project delivery/management are required. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
Main duties and responsibilities include:
- Plan and conduct experiments to suit customer requirements
- Develop appropriate composite design, joining/manufacturing and failure investigation capabilities for composites
- Deliver projects efficiently to meet client, health, safety, quality and budget requirements
- Work within a team to understand and develop the business opportunities for internally developed technologies/services
- Support commercialisation efforts by working with other project leaders, customers and suppliers
Required skills/expertise:
- Undergraduate degree or higher qualification in a Materials/Mechanical or a related engineering discipline
- Knowledge and experience in delivering industrial projects
- Knowledge and experience in composite pipes, tanks and connectors
- Knowledge and experience in composite failure analysis
- Knowledge and experience in the mechanical behaviour of composites and composites testing
- Strong customer interaction skills and a willingness to develop this skill
- Flexibility to work independently but also in a highly collaborative team environment
- Experience in project planning and management
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent team player

Travel:
This position will require occasional travel within the UK and Europe to attend project meetings and to develop single client business, as and when required.
