Principal Engineer – Materials Technology
Would you like to work on one of the most complex engineering projects in the Metallurgy Team within the Materials Technology Department on all Submarine programmes? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer – Materials Technology at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Principal Engineer – Material Technology, you will provide your expertise to the business as all aspects of metallic materials as well as the management and coordination of the laboratory environment.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on a range of metallic materials and R&D associated to submarine build and delivery.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer – Materials Technology will involve:
- Management of the laboratory environment
- Mechanical Testing of metallic materials
- Use of Infrared and Digital Microscopes
- Management of the transition into a new laboratory
- Laboratory risk and COSH assessments
- Team Management
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential:
- Degree or HND in Metallurgy or Materials Science/Materials Engineering
- COSH knowledge
- Good understanding of analytical testing or tensile testing
- Technical background (chemist, materials science, technician)
- High standards of laboratory etiquette
- Experience of Research and Development
Desirable:
- Understanding of Submarine business
- Steel making/welding background

You will be a skilled and confident communicator, both written and verbal communication. Be self-motivated and can work as part of a team as well as one your own. Possessing a good level of diplomacy to enable successful interaction with a range of stakeholders who may have conflicting requirements.
