Principal Enterprise Systems Engineer

We are looking for a Data Technology Leader to join our Commerce and Financial Data Engineering team to build data pipelines to enable product and business teams to move faster and achieve greater results! We want an architect who combines superb technical skills to craft innovative solutions with a passion for influencing and mentoring other senior individual contributors. This person must be comfortable translating vague problems into pragmatic solutions that open up the boundaries of technical possibilities and inspire others to follow.
The person for this role is passionate about distributed systems, including caching, streaming, and indexing technologies on the cloud; is always looking to maintain higher standards for themselves as well as everyone in the team; and enjoys teaching others and scales themselves by bringing others along. This person is a leader and influencer on the team but also willing to get into the day-to-day engineering tasks when needed.

What you’ll do:
Design and build the next generation Commerce and Financial Systems pipeline
Actively participate with our development team in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, functional and technical design, development, testing and roll-out, and support
Meet with leadership to present key findings, clearly communicate challenges, and offer suggestions for resolution
Collaborate with and learn from all members and levels of our team
Mentor, share and make knowledge available inside and outside the team
Interact with technical and non-technical leaders and partners to collect feedback and present results
Contribute to setting standards and development principles for the team and influence across the larger organization
Drive alignment & adoption of Expedia data platform reference patterns across business units through collaboration on MVPs
Curate, maintain and narrate end to end architectural vision of our systems, so everyone from leaders to individual contributors understands the technical direction
Set and maintain a bar on engineering and operational excellence, through guardrails, metrics, and practices
Define long-term architecture & technical strategy, and capabilities for Commerce & Financial data streams, processing, stores
Liaison with peer teams within and outside portfolio domains to define technical interfaces for system dependencies
Build relationships with engineering and product leaders across the organization to understand business problems and apply a technology lens to resolve them
Who you are:
Bachelor's or Master’s in related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience
Have built and operated cloud-based, highly available and scalable online serving or streaming, or machine learning-based systems utilizing large, diverse data sets in production for 7-10 years
Proficient with AWS infrastructure and services
Proficient with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Java, Scala, C++, etc.
Presents new technology options to technical and non-technical observers, able to guide others to make well defined technology choices
Experience with public cloud service offerings (IaaS, PaaS, DBaaS services) as well high level compute offerings such, as Spark, Lamda, Kafka, Flink, Scala, KStream, EMR, Qubole, Cassandra, Redis, Rest, GraphQL, gRPC and AWS
Knowledge of modern data stores like Oracle, MySQL, Postgres, MongoDB, Cassandra, Elastic Search, Dynamo, HFS
Experience with Modern API platform design ( REST, gRPC, GraphQL Modern data architectures (e.g. event driven architectures, data democratization, platform approaches to support ML/AI at scale, stream processing, and integrating real time analytics into customer applications)
Ability to look at solutions in creative and unconventional ways, recognize opportunities to innovate, and engage partners in a vision and strategy
Coached, influenced, and inspired multiple teams to tackle technical problems
Championed code quality, automated testing, design reviews, and other engineering practices
Experienced in designing API for internal and external consumers, architecting, and operating scalable and elastic distributed systems
The total cash range for this position in Chicago is $191,000 to $267,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $30,500, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.
The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $207,500 to $290,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $332,000, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.
Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
