Expedia Group is engaging in a new journey and we’re revolutionizing how our company operates with a new full stack API Platform for Travel Products, allowing API providers and API consumers to be productive in end-to-end flows from onboarding to transacting and evolving their technical and business successes. Our platform also supports advanced capabilities like no-code workflows and theme-able UIs beyond APIs.

We work in a fast-paced and highly visible environment, we own the application lifecycle from conception to retirement, prioritizing quality and reliability everywhere along the way. We're looking for an experienced, collaborative and creative technical leader who will drive the development of our products and ensure the success of our organization.

In this role, you will lead various aspects of the technical offering of the platform, including the API Gateway, one of its core component, and architect the API management strategy at Expedia Group.

What you'll do:

  • Build relationships with engineering and product leaders across the organization to understand business problems and apply a technology lens to resolve them

  • Interpret internal/external business challenges and recommend integration of the appropriate systems, applications and technology to provide a fully functional solution to a business problem

  • Work across global teams to drive adoption towards the north star architecture

  • Participate actively in communities of practice in EG to share and gain knowledge

  • Use software design principles, data structures and/or design patterns, and computer science fundamentals to write clean, efficient, maintainable, optimized and modular code with good naming conventions

  • Lead/Clarify code evolution in code reviews, identify areas of improvement in code as well as processes, and propose and implement better solutions while educating others

  • Report on status of difficult or high-level projects to local tech leadership via written or oral means, and ensure documentation is complete

  • Be the technical expert in relevant technology stacks, ranging from Cloud Platforms (like AWS), Containerized Workloads, API Gateway, Authentication & Authorization, as well as High Availability and Scalability design and implementation

  • Advocate for Operational Excellence (such as automated testing, establishing SLAs, programming for resiliency and scalability)

  • Strive for optimum organizational efficiency by applying systems thinking across boundaries and making recommendations about policies/ processes

  • Think holistically to find opportunities around policies/ processes to increase efficiency across organizational boundaries

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's or Masters in a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience

  • A problem solver and team player who has experience with high throughput systems

  • Strong communication and presentation experience and the ability to explain technical details and challenges to a wide variety of people

  • Ability to look at solutions in creative ways, recognize opportunities to innovate, and engage partners in a vision and strategy

  • Expert knowledge in topics around standard methodologies in API management, Versioning and Lifecycle as well as Authentication and Authorization concerns

  • Experience with API Gateway and API Management technologies like Spring Cloud, Kong or Apigee

  • Experience with REST APIs, Kubernetes and NoSQL technologies

  • Experience in API Design and Domain-Driven Development, knowledge of data exchange formats like Protobuf, GraphQL and Avro would be phenomenal

  • Experience building high scale distributed cloud-based microservice architectures

  • Strong understanding of Site Reliability Engineering

  • Strong background in third-party cloud services, especially Amazon AWS technologies

  • Strong experience with backend technologies such as Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, Scala, client / server architecture and domain driven design

The total cash range for this position in Chicago is $191,000.00 to $267,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $305,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
