Legal Counsel
Expedia Group is looking for a dynamic and pragmatic attorney with a passion for technology and privacy to join the Expedia Legal and Corporate Affairs Privacy team. This position is within the Expedia Group privacy team that supports all Expedia Group brands. As a global leader in the travel industry with a strong focus on innovation and technology, Expedia Group offers a unique opportunity to work on a diverse spectrum of matters – from marketing tech, to artificial intelligence, to recruitment.
Your work will include advising teams across the business on how to effectively process personal data, with a focus on the People team. You will also provide legal advice across a broad range of travel and technology legal issues. This is a dynamic, challenging, and fun environment where you can be creative, collaborative and develop your privacy expertise as part of a highly respected legal team. The role will be based in Seattle and will report to the regional privacy lead for the Americas region.
What you’ll do:
Work as part of a cross-company global team delivering best in class privacy counseling to Human Resources, Marketing, Services, B2C and B2B business teams, including leading and playing a key part in data protection impact assessments
Create and provide guides and training to legal team members, clients, and cross-functional stakeholders on privacy to ensure consistent and clear guidance on applicable laws, regulations, and relevant self-regulatory frameworks
Track new laws and regulations to help analyze and communicate the implications of changing U.S. and international laws and regulations to business teams and colleagues
Draft and negotiate specific privacy terms and DPAs in vendor contracts
Educate and advocate for privacy and data protection in cross-functional forums
Lead work to develop and deliver best in class privacy and data protection training initiatives across the company
Draft consumer, B2B, and employee privacy notices, privacy policies and regulatory filings
Who you are:
You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a desire for continuous self-improvement
You should be a quick learner, you thrive in a team environment and you look for opportunities to take initiative
You should solve legal problems in innovative and commercially savvy ways and partner strongly with your business and legal colleagues
J.D. degree or equivalent with membership in at least one state bar; or equivalent related professional experience
WA bar admission or otherwise authorized to practice law in WA State
At least 3 years relevant privacy experience as a practicing attorney in a top law firm and/or in a fast-paced in-house legal environment
Experience in a global legal department and with international privacy issues and HIPAA desired
Good understanding of e-commerce technologies and business models, including location-based services, behavioral targeting, online advertising and understanding of how privacy law and regulations apply
Ability to assess and communicate risk within the context of business-driven goals
Ability to work on a wide range of matters with minimal supervision
Record of establishing positive working relationships with business clients and legal colleagues
