Director, Legal (IP)

The IP Team is hiring! We are looking for an experienced, energetic, and business-savvy intellectual property attorney with a strong background in trademark, copyright, internet law, and transactional intellectual property experience in television and commercial productions, to join our team. The right candidate will be a dynamic problem solver and critical thinker with the ability to deal with a broad range of unique challenges and issues in a fast-paced and ever-changing area of law. In this role, you will work with Expedia’s global businesses on a wide range of intellectual property (IP) matters including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements for IP licensing, rights acquisitions, commercial transactions, and related counseling. You will provide strategic business and legal support on intellectual property issues related to creative productions and projects and will manage pre-litigation intellectual property rights enforcement and defense. You will work collaboratively with business and legal teams; assist in developing and maintaining an effective intellectual property education and training program; and contribute to and shape Expedia’s IP strategy.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide strategic business and legal support on intellectual property issues related to creative productions and projects, including managing, negotiating, and drafting appropriate agreements (acquisition of talent and celebrities, music rights, photography services, location, image licenses, and related agreements)

  • Provide IP insights on creative projects by collaborating closely with marketing and brand business teams

  • Provide strategic business and legal support on intellectual property pre-litigation disputes and enforcement for trademark, DMCA and other infringement claims, setting and implementing global strategies

  • Work collaboratively with brand and procurement counsels to execute global legal strategy for supporting creative productions and projects, including delineating roles and responsibilities, developing template agreements, and related counseling

  • Consult and advise Expedia's transactional and brand attorneys on the multifaceted IP aspects in commercial agreements

  • Supervise outside counsel efficiently regarding pre-litigation IP disputes and partnering effectively with Expedia’s litigation team

  • Develop strong client relationships that increase opportunities to identify, create and/or protect intellectual property

  • Assist in developing, conducting, and maintaining an effective intellectual property education and training framework for business and legal peers

Who you are:

  • Minimum of 7 years in IP, with substantial tenure in a dynamic, in-house legal setting. International exposure is a plus

  • Membership in the Washington State Bar or intent to Apply by Motion

  • Adeptness in drafting, reviewing, and negotiations, and experience working on creative productions and projects. Familiarity with trade secrets, open-source licenses, and patents is advantageous

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an ability to influence for positive outcomes

  • Self-motivated, demonstrating initiative and sound judgment

  • Effectively work with geographically and functionally diverse groups within the company

  • Track record of establishing and cultivating strong working relationships with both business clients and legal department colleagues

  • Highly organized with an ability to prioritize and multi-task while meeting deadlines

  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Abe to work closely with a legal team to meet collective goals and support each other’s business, legal and professional work

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $209,000.00 to $292,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $334,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
