Position Overview

This position involves being a part of Engineering team that develops complex embedded hardware products in the area of Teleprotection and communications for the electric utility market.

The individual in this position should be able to perform system-level testing, verification and validation testing on complex industrial products which are heavy on Networking and Ethernet Technologies. Examples- Teleprotection equipment, Packet-based Multiplexers, Substation automation equipment, Distribution automation equipment etc. The position will include testing of new software/firmware builds, hardware modules, conceiving and executing test cases, performing root cause analysis, troubleshooting of bugs/issues. The individual in this position must be able to participate in a deep level technical conversation about product testing and must be comfortable working in a lab environment for extended hours.

This position is for an engineer who enjoys working on all aspects of launching new products, works with a sense of urgency and aspires to deliver top tier quality solutions to the end-user.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute detailed test plans and validation procedures on complex industrial-grade products.
  • Experience in performing system testing with substation communication or tele-protection equipment,
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D (Engineering), Product Management and Manufacturing, to gather input on potential product related issues.
  • Build/reconfigure test environments based on use-cases and based on product design philosophy.
  • Help identify and scope more complex test cases based on product management or customer requirements.
  • Communicate articulately overall test progress, critical issues and improvement suggestions to the necessary stakeholders
  • Execute test cases for industrial products which are heavy on Networking and Ethernet-technologies,
  • Perform system testing to validate new software/firmware builds, release candidates.
  • Act independently with considerable judgment & initiative to perform troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of failed test cases. Isolate/narrow-down issues intelligently.
  • Troubleshoot and characterize product performance issues to improve product quality, and reliability ultimately leading to an improved product experience for the end-user.
  • Document test results, bugs, issues using online tools such as – VSTS, DevOps, JIRA etc.

Skills and Experience

  • BSEE, BSCS, BSCE Degree with 5 years of industrial experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must have 5 years of experience as a System-level Test Engineer for validating new firmware, software (GUI applications) and embedded hardware,
  • Must possess strong understanding of System-level testing concepts and methods (Smoke testing, Integration Testing, stress testing, Regression Testing),
  • Strong ability to independently execute test cases as per outlined test plan,
  • An individual with strong passion and proficiency for product testing with a desire for adding value to the R&D group by making significant contributions,
  • Open minded, inquisitive with “go-getter” attitude,
  • A quick learner, self-starter who can effectively work with minimal guidance.
  • Proficient in using testing/validation tools such as Wireshark, Terminal Emulators (SSH, Telnet, PuTTY etc.).
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communications skills in order to report test results, bugs, observations,
  • Demonstrated experience of interacting with firmware/software developers, product engineers, product management for test results review/discussion/reporting,
  • Demonstrated experience of efficiently working in a fast-paced, goal-oriented product development environment,
  • Basic knowledge of using a multimeter, oscilloscope, etc.
  • Must have the aptitude for grasping/learning new concepts, technologies such as Carrier Ethernet, MPLS-TP, SDN to successfully perform functional testing on the products designed with these technologies

Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
