Position Overview
The Product Designer will create and develop original, market-driven product designs for residential markets. The Designer will use hand-drawings, 3D illustrations and 2D Auto-CAD computer drawings to conceptualize and communicate their ideas. The Designer should have an understanding of production methods and materials and use that knowledge to create designs that are suitable for the target market. The Designer will collaborate with colleagues and cross functional teams and work closely with overseas team members and suppliers. Other responsibilities include trend and market research, consumer trend analysis and overseeing the development of product samples throughout various stages of development.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design proposals using hand-drawn illustrations and/or CAD (SolidEdge, Rhino, Keyshot, or similar)
- Presentation of ideas internally and externally to customers at various stages of the design process
- Develop compelling and sellable design solutions, both individually and in collaboration with team members
- Evaluates design ideas based on factors such as aesthetic appearance, design-function, materials engineering, methods of production, application, budget and selling price.
- Collaboration with external contract manufacturing partners on development of design projects
- Trend and market research
Skills and Experience
- BA/BFA Degree in Industrial Design or equivalent experience
- 5+ years Product Design experience (Residential Lighting / Home Decor industry background preferred)
- Strong portfolio displaying creativity, problem solving and technical ability.
- Strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to successfully develop, launch and execute multiple projects to target goals.
- Software:
- AutoCAD or equivalent proficiency
- SolidEdge or Rhino or equivalent proficiency, including rendering such as KeyShot
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written
- Creative skills with a passion for design
- Must be self-directed and attentive to detail.
- Assists with market introductions.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 25+ lbs.
- Ability to travel up to 15%, including international travel.
