Position Overview

Job Summary:
The Automation Mechanical Technician is a mechanical role building Custom Automated Machines – which we design at our location. Every machine we build is innovative and creative - designed to automate a previously manual process that has never been automated before. Hands-on build and test effort to create new machines that function like self-contained automated assembly-lines.

  • Working with our engineers and Senior Automation Technicians on our build team to help us convert engineering designs into working custom automation equipment that meets design specs and goals.
  • Mechanical and Electrical assembly experience, and hands-on skills learned from repairing equipment, machining, fabrication, troubleshooting, assembly, etc. are required to build the Custom Automated Machines that we design.
  • Hands-on mechanic work to assemble, align, and install all components and subassemblies including: actuators, lasers, servo drives, automatic feeders, prox sensors, dial indexers, sensors, drives, pneumatics, and pick & place robotics, automatic packaging, machining, sawing, welding, forming, pressing, and almost anything we can dream up.
  • Troubleshooting and repair of all components in our Custom Automated Machines.

Duties and Responsibilities

Detailed Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Automation Mechanical Technician will need to work professionally with engineers and technicians to build, troubleshoot, install and service our Custom Automated Machines. This role will require working with engineers to interpret our designs, and then to bring our designs to life. Study specifications & review our models & drawings in SolidWorks as directed by Senior Automation Technicians.
  • Organize and stage incoming materials from our machine shop, and outside vendors for the build. Calculate dimensions, tolerances, precision fits, alignments and clearances, and determine assembly methods for putting together the various components of our Custom Automated Machines.
  • Some Electrical Controls Panel assembly of internal components, with power supplies, PLCs, relays, VFDs, breakers, motor controllers, vision system controllers, robot controllers, safety controllers etc., per prints.
  • Able to verify conformance of machined parts to drawing specifications and tolerances.
  • Any experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), PLCs, Servo tuning, Sensors, HMI set-up and testing also a plus.
  • Testing operation of all subsystems, and debug all systems to meet machine requirements for product quality and through-put rate.

Skills and Experience

  • Education and/or Experience: experience in a mechanic / manufacturing / machinist / electrician environment and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Hands-on skills you might learn from working on cars, farms, homes, etc. is a strong benefit.
  • Precision alignment of rotary and linear, indexers and actuators: Station-to-station part position repeatable alignment with various tooling to perform sequential precision operations on parts.
  • Some level of familiarity with VFDs, servo drives, and programming PLC’s.
  • Mathematical Skill: Ability to work with basic high school math concepts. Able to measure parts accurately with machinist tools such as calipers, micrometers, etc
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
