Position Overview

The Director of technology innovation and partnerships, reporting to the Vice President of Technology Strategy & Management office of the CTO, will play a key role in partnering with Hubbell’s electrical and utility segment business and technical leaders to define and coordinate product technology strategy, architectural design, future proofing customer solution technology stack and related partnership opportunities. Work cross-functionally across the enterprise to develop strong investment theses and to ensure that stakeholders are aligned and business objectives are understood, as well as help segments to accelerate and improve their use of technology to drive new business. You will also engage with external partners and universities to facilitate stronger interactions with Hubbell in strategic technology topics. The candidate will play a key role in scaling product development engineering teams and preparing the company for the next stage of growth.

The preferred candidate should possess strong entrepreneurial traits, technical curiosity and strong knowledge of electrical and utility markets; along with a passion to contribute in a hands-on role with a dynamic range of projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a close working relationship with colleagues in Hubbell R&D, sales and marketing organizations to understand the evolving market landscape, competitors, product and technology trends, emerging uses cases, applications and product standards

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary cross functional team in the planning and execution of end user product technology strategy and planning workshops

  • Partner with business functions to identify new opportunities including process and/or value chain analysis, business service model, business canvas, process, solution enablement plan

  • Explore new and emerging technologies to create a vision of how technology will shape the future and invent the next wave of cutting-edge customer solutions

  • Lead the strategy, planning, and execution of the product technology radar and technology roadmaps, as part of a unified technology strategy, for existing and new product groups

  • Executes a governance process to provide corporate executive leadership with visibility into program performance and decision making ability

  • Identify and build relationships with venture capital funds, incubators and accelerators, academia and technology associations. Lead evaluations of technology partnerships and investments, in partnership with our corporate development team

  • Help lead the evaluation of inorganic opportunities (venture investments, technology acquisition, licensing and distribution agreements) in coordination with business development including opportunity assessments, technology evaluation and development of investment theses

  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team to create and maintain analytical tools and evaluation frameworks to assess fit for early stage start-ups and to evaluate and develop detailed opportunity assessments supporting investment decisions for strategic investment or organic development acceleration with key technology enablement

  • Provide support related to due-diligence, development/presentation of business cases/plans and integration as well as training and mentoring to functional and market-centric teams to develop open innovation capabilities

  • Provide strategic linkages to legal and IP expertise in the company

  • Drive alignment with the executive team on product releases, technology planning, and priorities

  • Ensure a close partnership with the product team to collectively bring high-quality software to customers in accordance with requirements, quality standards, and timelines

Skills and Experience

  • Required to use tact and diplomacy to build and maintain strong relationships with program participants and multiple levels of stakeholders

  • Past experience driving collaboration between Engineering and Product Leadership (VP/Director) to build a strong technical team culture (people management/mentorship, understanding engineering processes, hiring, etc.)

  • Must have strong analytical skills and understanding of business models and drivers of success in start-ups across several verticals

  • Ability to analyze and systematically evaluate potential open innovation and venture partners, including a proficiency with financial modelling, conducting market analysis and strategic planning

  • Excellent oral and writing communication skills needed. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities concurrently

  • Ability to organize and manage “ad-hoc” teams to support innovation opportunities

  • Capable of frequent travel to attend meetings

  • Strong mathematic, analytical and computer skills

  • Strong proficiency in architecture design; past experience with architecting complex platforms and developing enterprise-level technology roadmaps

  • Proven success with defining security standards for systems and software and meeting data privacy requirements from a technical standpoint

  • Designed, implemented, and optimized processes for development, QA, security, and IT

Education & Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or business field is preferred, along with a minimum of 7-10 years of related experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD or MS degree; MBA highly desired.

  • Experience in Engineering, R&D and Technical Marketing in formal or informal leadership roles

  • Experience with start-ups, technology companies or venture capital. Demonstrated success in developing revenue producing OI/3rd Party collaboration efforts
