Job Description
Shopify’s mission is to make commerce better for everyone. Infrastructure provides Shopify with the foundational technologies the company uses to build our products.
As Shopify scales to build new features and onboard new merchants, our product needs to evolve and move towards an event driven architecture. This allows Shopify to reduce engineering complexity, provides fault tolerance and enables developer agility. To succeed at this challenge, we need a solid streaming platform to collect, process and distribute events that is ergonomic, scalable, fast, resilient, flexible and extensible.
The Streaming Platform group in Infrastructure is seeking a skilled Principal Engineer to help build such a platform and collaborate closely across Shopify in shaping the future of an event driven mission. Streaming Platform already serves 20M messages/second at peak and is growing traffic at 50% YoY. As we expand and take on more critical flows, the number of teams, use cases and ways to leverage this platform continues to grow each year.
Responsibilities:
- Independently propose, champion, drive clarity and simplicity on projects with Shopify wide impact
- Proficiently evolve all aspects of a Streaming stack, including ingestion, processing and consuming of events and related infrastructure
- Collaborate with other principal engineers and tech leads to set and drive technical strategy and roadmap towards an event driven architecture at Shopify
- Work with open source ecosystem (Kafka, Flink, Debezium and related ecosystems) with the ability to influence/contribute to unblock Shopify’s needs
- Stay updated on the latest streaming technologies and patterns and apply those learnings back to our goals
- Mentor and coach engineers, take part in shaping culture to build a healthy and impactful team
Qualifications
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- You have demonstrated Industry/Company wide impact using Streaming technologies and event driven architecture
- Championed and delivered on complex technical projects touching many engineering teams that led to measurable impact
- Collaborated with staff-level leads across multiple teams, building trust, influencing direction, and fostering collaboration
- Experience working with and influencing open source community and/or cloud vendors
- Ability to dive into the codebase to influence by prototyping and building
