This position will be responsible for the development of machine control system solutions that leverage standardized platforms (i.e. flexible “Module and Cart” assembly concept) as well as discrete assembly solutions depending on product line strategy. The engineer will also work with the business unit to support initiatives for platform derivatives for new product introduction, new product insourcing efforts, and cost out efforts.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Responsible for all aspects of automation and control system development aligned to new product introduction: concepting, quoting, requisitioning, design for manufacturability, machine design reviews, build, conditioning, validation, first article approval, and process capability
- Drive assembly development velocity in a team setting to achieve aggressive product launch timing goals
- Development of local/regional design, program, build supply base for initial build and ongoing machine maintenance requirements
- Ensure documentation meets all TE requirements
- Evaluate and recommend assembly processes and machine designs to ensure that manufacturing capabilities meet capacity and cost objectives
- Identify new assembly technologies to reduce costs, improved efficiencies, and decrease ppm defects that will differentiate us from competition. Select correct automation and control technologies for different processes considering both flexibility and scalability
- Contribute to capacity analysis for both current and future platform expansions
- Utilize flexible assembly prototyping techniques to support product validation testing and minimize subsequent conditioning time
Additional Responsibilities:
- Insure safety standards per TEC-124-98 reflective of IEC, ANSI, NEC, and RIA standards are met for all assembly machine builds
- Insure all designs for automation processes are available and at current revision regardless of internal or external production upon product launches
- Provide necessary engineering support for automation and control technology to other development functions to create solutions for cross-functional projects
- Continually learn and lead implementation of automation and control technologies
- Initiate and review design and process constructions and/or major modifications
- Work with Global Centers of Excellence and Advanced Manufacturing Technology groups to ensure deployment across the BU for ready-to-deploy and digital-advantage initiatives
Required Qualifications:
- Semi-automated and fully automated assembly experience
- Working knowledge of controls programming techniques, safety systems, servo motors and drives, robotics, vision systems, and other devices that are required for a fully automated machine design
- Demonstrated understanding of different control technologies (i.e., PLC, DCS and PC based control systems)
- Self-motivated with effective problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to proactively drive projects with minimal guidance or supervision
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
- Willing to travel both domestically and globally as required and accommodate other time zones for regular communications
Skills
Clearly demonstrated experience with:
- deploying automation technologies for production cells across multiple processes
- robotics including SCARA, 6-axis, linear, and other frameworks
- machine vision and sensing (2D and 3D)
- servo control including closely coupled coordinated motion across multiple axes
- networking multiple control systems together using both industrial networks and the enterprise system
- CAD - AutoCAD (Electrical)
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of LEAN and Six Sigma principles
- Prefer mechanical CAD experience with Space Claim or Creo
- Proven experience and success in leading global projects
- Understanding of TE core processes (i.e., molding, stamping, plating, assembly)
- Programming experience with control development using languages such as C (event driven), VB (HMI), and other languages beyond PLC programming
- Working knowledge of Ignition server software (Inductive Automation)
