About the role
The Principal Engineer Process Safety is accountable to the Lead Principal Chemical and Process and leads the development, governance, and delivery of AGL’s Process Safety Management framework across Integrated Energy Operations. Working closely with the Lead Principal Chemistry and Process and other technical leads, the role ensures process safety risks are effectively managed across the full asset lifecycle. As the technical authority for process safety, the role provides expert advice, assures compliance with legislative and AGL requirements, and drives continuous improvement in process safety capability, performance, and culture.
What you will be doing:
Lead and govern the Process Safety Management (PSM) Program across IE Operations and the broader organisation.
Develop, maintain, and embed Process Safety policies, standards, systems, and frameworks into business‑as‑usual operations.
Integrate Process Safety performance indicators into enterprise reporting, including the Compliance Dashboard.
Ensure Process Safety requirements are embedded into the AGL Asset Management System, supporting asset lifecycle decision‑making.
Audit critical controls for key process safety risks, identify gaps, and drive improvement actions across operational sites.
Project manage the IE Process Safety Program, including governance, metrics, reporting, and assurance activities.
Partner with senior leaders, asset owners, and safety and risk teams to ensure clear ownership and accountability for process safety risks.
Champion a proactive process safety culture, including the establishment of cross‑AGL communities of practice.
Drive continuous improvement and innovation to reduce risk exposure and support AGL’s journey toward target zero outcomes.
What we would like to see you bring:
Tertiary qualifications in Project Management, Engineering, or Science.
Demonstrated process safety competence, ideally within a heavy industrial or high‑hazard environment.
Strong project and program management capability, including scheduling, resourcing, governance, and reporting.
Proven experience leading complex change initiatives across large, matrixed organisations.
Highly developed communication and influencing skills, with confidence engaging executive and senior stakeholders.
Experience working with process safety, risk, and compliance management systems.
Proven leadership capability, high initiative, and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
What’s in It for You?
At AGL, safety is foundational to everything we do. You’ll be part of a team that values technical excellence, collaboration, and innovation — and you’ll play a key role in shaping how process safety supports Australia’s evolving energy system.
We offer flexible working, competitive remuneration, and the opportunity to make a genuine impact in an organisation committed to inclusion, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
