Job Description

The Position

The Senior Mechanical Engineer reporting to the SCP Engineering Lead is a key member of the site capital projects team. Responsible for ensuring that critical equipment mechanical design, specialty equipment mechanical design and materials of construction meet ALB business objectives, keeping systems updated, consistent with Australian Standards and WorkSafe as well as Albemarle quality and technical requirements. This role presents a unique opportunity to implement and oversee lean engineering approaches for a portfolio of capital projects at Albemarle’s Kemerton Plant, a world-class lithium hydroxide manufacturing facility. Working closely with colleagues in operations, maintenance, process technology (PT), HSE, contracting & procurement, and other functional groups to deliver safe, competitive, and predictable projects that meet or exceed the budgets and long-range plans for the Lithium Global Business Unit (GBU).

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to Albemarle safety standards throughout the sustaining capital projects execution.

  • Protect Albemarle information in all new projects and dealing with contractors and sub-contractors.

  • Assist in developing and conveying the unique safety culture of the Kemerton plant, with the new systems developed, to contractors and vendors with the goal of zero harm (or other similar protocols developed for Kemerton).

  • Assist Sustaining Capital with Critical Engineering Information for the Albemarle plant, ensuring documentation availability, completeness and keeping information current for live plant.

  • Review work packages developed by the contractor that are within the scope of the project and are accurate, workable, and economical.

  • Ensure designs are in compliance with all pertinent standards, specifications, codes, and regulations.

  • Provide specific discipline expertise to assure continuity and maintenance of the Albemarle Engineering Specifications and Standards, including best practice documentation related to systems design.

  • Inspection of equipment at supplier’s premises as part of Inspection Test Procedures and Factory Acceptance Testing.

  • Provide inspection of construction and equipment installation, during various phases, to ensure compliance with design, codes and standards.

  • Identify opportunity for improvement and develop solutions that improve the efficiency, quality, and speed of the mechanical design process.

  • Participate in overall estimate reviews at gate reviews and final execution.

  • Contribute to the development of the integrated Project schedule and change management/mitigation.

  • Review completeness and accuracy, approve or endorse deliverables per the Project “Document Distribution and Approval Matrices”.

  • Review and comment on engineering design calculations and documentation such as specifications, Scopes of Work, PFD's, P&ID's, plot plans and equipment arrangement drawings.

  • 3D model reviews for accessibility, maintainability, operability and constructability.

  • Participate in HAZOP’s and resolve any assigned HAZOP action items.

  • Assist in resolving plant mechanical concerns, liaising with maintenance and reliability engineers.

  • Participate in value engineering, constructability, and risk reviews and support maintenance of the risks and opportunities register.

  • Review and provide input on equipment selection.

  • Coordinate and communicate Project activities with reliability engineer counterparts.

  • Identify any Project deficiencies for Project team correction.

  • Provide strategic direction in equipment and spares procurement for supplier and contractor engagement strategies.

  • Coordination and integration of Project activities with counterparts in Operations.

  • Assist Operations team with pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up activities as required.

  • Sign off for care, custody, and transfer (CCT) where required.

Work Experience / Technical Skill Requirements

  • 10+ years relevant mechanical engineering experience, related to minerals processing and materials handling.

  • Prior experience working with EPCM Greenfields or Brownfields environment, preferably in a processing plant, either in a chemical processing plant or mining processing industry.

  • Ability to review overall project issues and requirements.

  • Demonstrate organizational approach to risk management and Management of Change systems.

  • Strong communication skills in multi-discipline teams.

Education / Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, recognized by Engineers Australia.

  • Knowledge of Australian Standards requirements for compliance with WorkSafe in Western Australia.

  • Excellent computer literacy.

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint.

  • SharePoint and SAP proficiency preferable.

  • Skillful in effective communication and stakeholder engagement.
