Commencing in early January 2025 the Electrical Apprenticeship opportunities will be located at our Portland Aluminium Smelter.
As part of this four-year Apprenticeship Program you will be:
Provided with on the job & formalised TAFE training to achieve a nationally recognised trade certificate.
Trained in all Portland Aluminium safe work systems and health and safety requirements. Ultimately, using a wide variety of tooling, machinery, and mobile plant for safe competition of maintenance tasks.
Rotating through different areas of the plant including the Plant Switchyard, giving you the opportunity to develop your sitewide knowledge.
Discovering how electricity is generated and distributed around the Portland Smelter; learning to understand both the instrument and electrical equipment used for controlling the process of making Aluminium.
Trained in reading and understanding schematic, single line electrical and process instrument drawings.
Assisting in job scoping, pre work and execution including the development of maintenance work instructions and isolation procedures.
Working in a dynamic, heavy-duty environment. The work can be physically demanding, and a high degree of manual dexterity is essential.
Working on a variety of instruments and monitoring equipment ranging from simple light and power installations to variable speed drives and programmable logic controllers (PLC).
Working on a vast variety of fixed plant such as Cranes, Ship Unloaders, Casters, Pot control Wall boxes, Switch Gear and Motor Control Centres
Involved in the diagnosis, repair, servicing and maintenance of all types of electrical equipment including controls for hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

What you can bring to the role
To play a part in our ongoing success, we are seeking someone who has:
A high dedication and focus towards safety.
A good academic record with a proven interest in electrical equipment
Involvement in any related extracurricular activities or have gained relevant knowledge in that field.
A current, valid Australian ‘Learners’ Drivers Licence or working towards.
Completed a minimum of year 10, with a high pass in Mathematics and English
Solid school attendance record
Completed a pre-apprenticeship, and relevant trade-based work experience is highly desirable

About the Location
Our Portland Smelter is a joint venture between Alcoa of Australia (55%), CITIC (22.5%) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia (22.5%). Alcoa manages the day-to-day operations at the smelter and we produce approximately 19 per cent of Australia’s total aluminium production in Portland.
