Alinta Energy is one of Australia’s biggest energy retailers, generators and developers with over 1.1 million customers. Australia’s energy system is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history and we’re right there with it. We’re investing in and developing large-scale renewables and storage projects as part of our ongoing effort to provide our customers with reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.
About the role
Join Alinta Energy on a 12-month max-term contract as an Operations & Maintenance Technician at our Bairnsdale Power Station, where you’ll help operate and maintain the plant safely, reliably and efficiently. Working within a small, collaborative team, you’ll bring your electrical expertise to plant operations, turbine and balance-of-plant maintenance, fault finding, instrumentation and control systems, while also supporting outages and capital improvement projects. This is a broad, hands-on role where everyone pitches in, giving you the opportunity to expand your capability beyond your core trade and gain valuable experience across power station operations.
Why you’ll love working here
At Alinta Energy, we’re taking real action to deliver reliable and sustainable energy for Australia - and that practical approach runs through everything we do. You’ll get clear direction, genuine flexibility, and the support you need to grow, all while working on projects that make a lasting difference. We’re big enough to create impact, but small enough that your ideas and effort will always be seen.
There are plenty of other great benefits of working for Alinta Energy, including flexible working, energy discounts, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a paid volunteer day each year, fully stocked kitchens, and lots more.
What you'll do
- Operate and monitor generating plant and associated systems, respond to alarms and plant issues, and support safe plant starts, shutdowns and routine operational activities once trained and authorised.
- Perform planned and reactive electrical maintenance across turbines, generating plant and associated equipment, including fault finding and troubleshooting.
- Work across instrumentation and control systems to identify faults, resolve plant issues and support safe, reliable operations.
- Support capital improvement projects, planned maintenance and outages, working across disciplines as part of a small, hands-on team.
- Coordinate and oversee contractors on site, including permits, isolations, safe work requirements, documentation and compliance with HSE standards.
- Undertake site-specific training and progressively develop capability in broader plant operations, permit systems and HV switching, subject to qualifications, training and authorisation.
- Once trained and assessed as competent, participate in the site on-call roster and respond to plant issues outside normal working hours when required.
Your experience
- A Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, or an equivalent electrical trade qualification, with strong practical maintenance capability.
- Demonstrated experience in electrical fault finding and troubleshooting, ideally with exposure to instrumentation, control systems, PLCs or SCADA environments.
- Experience in power generation would be highly regarded, although experience in oil and gas, utilities, heavy industry or similarly complex industrial environments would also provide a strong background.
- Experience working under permit-to-work, isolation and safe work systems within an operational or industrial environment.
- Exposure to HV switching and hazardous areas would be advantageous, together with the ability to read and interpret technical drawings, procedures and technical documentation.
- A proactive, approachable and collaborative mindset, with a willingness to take initiative, ask questions and work outside your core trade to support the wider team.
Please note this role requires full working rights within Australia.
