The Opportunity

The role of the Reliability & Maintenance Engineer is to provide technical support to the Lead Service Engineer and Melbourne LRV service teams. Located in Preston, it is responsible for the revision / creation of manuals, systems, standards, maintenance regimes and technical solutions to improve the performance and reliability of the vehicles. The role will monitor performance of fleet, investigate and propose performance improvement solutions, lead and maintain visualisation boards, and improve maintenance regimes and work flow efficiency.

Reliability Engineering

  • Apply Engineering principles to investigate vehicle trends and perform root cause analysis
  • Apply FRACAS process and RCA to identify and resolve system performance defects
  • Responsible for the Response Team in the investigation and analysis of trends in vehicle performance (defects, reliability, availability etc.).
  • Responsible for the development of researched solutions to address vehicle performance trends with the aim of minimising or eliminating their reoccurrence. Such solutions may involve changes to suppliers, design, maintenance regimes etc. and will require close liaison with other functional departments such as engineering, supply management and customers.
  • Provide Failure Mode analysis to determine suitable controls to improve performance and to allow vehicles to remain in service with non-safety critical defects.
  • Assist in the development of useful data collection systems relating to vehicle condition, performance, reliability etc.
  • Assist in the development of researched solutions to address vehicle performance trends with the aim of minimising or eliminating their reoccurrence. Such solutions may involve changes to suppliers, design, maintenance regimes etc.
  • Assist in the continuous review of maintenance regimes with view to balancing exams, optimising workflow, and reducing maintenance costs while satisfying safety requirements and minimising risk.
  • Responsible for the ongoing assessment and analysis of vehicle condition to ensure that the systems and appropriate actions are in place to maintain contractual compliance.
  • Provide Engineering reports (internal and external), as required on a varying range of topics.
  • Hold performance and reliability reviews with our customer.
  • Establish and maintain a harmonious working environment in which all staff, associates, suppliers and customers are encouraged to participate in decision making.
  • Reliability: Calculate equipment failure rates using data from various sources and develop Reliability Block Diagrams with this information. Work with Engineering to agree upon failure rate targets for sub-systems.
  • Maintainability: Develop Maintainability Analyses and perform other required maintainability tasks.

Maintenance Engineering

  • Provide detailed reviews of the maintenance activities associated with the fleet and determine maintenance planning requirements to optimise exams and reduce maintenance costs while satisfying safety requirements and risk.
  • Manage & maintain a robust vehicle configuration change process for modifications and trialssist the development, verification and application/introduction of vehicle related standards that would be relevant and applicable for specific types of rail vehicles.
  • Responsible for the development of data collection processes and procedures relating to vehicle condition, performance, reliability etc.
  • Responsible for management and up-keep of the visualisation boards.
  • Perform cost benefit & risk analysis for proposed solutions to assess their viability within the constraints of the contract & budget
  • Produce proposals on relevant and cost-effective options for vehicle changes/modifications accompanied by the appropriate documentation such as risk analysis etc.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of overhaul intervals and specifications (scope of work) for major components based on results of risk analysis, specifications, vehicle condition (ie. condition monitoring) and financial constraints.
  • Utilise AVIS data to optimise maintenance regime.
  • Responsible for the ongoing assessment and analysis of vehicle condition to ensure that the systems and appropriate actions are in place to maintain contractual compliance.
  • Provide technical reports (internal and external), as required on a varying range of topics.
  • Provide monthly reports to management on vehicle related issues, performance and improvement initiatives.
  • Implementation and adherence to all corporate policies including OH&S and Quality.
  • Assist in maintaining a harmonious working environment in which all staff, associates, suppliers and customers are encouraged to participate in decision making.
  • Develop, review and modify work instructions, procedures etc.
  • Ensure configuration management control.
  • Auditing maintenance exams and other activities
  • Support maintenance planner to plan preventative / corrective maintenance activities and overhaul programs
  • Use Maximo to record all failures and apply RCM methodology to improve fleet availability and rreliability.
  • Determine stock required in store based on fleet failures and improvement initiatives.
