Are you passionate about startups and want to have a central role in helping them change the world? Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, is seeking a high-judgment, entrepreneurial, and experienced strategic and creative storytelling expert to build and lead a new solution marketing function that will define the messaging, positioning, and value proposition for the AWS Startups business and contextualize AWS’s broad range of products and services for a startup customer specifically. Working across communications channels from the top to the bottom of the marketing funnel, this role is tasked to drive campaigns and content that reinforce AWS’s reputation, credibility, and trust as the backbone of the global startup ecosystem.

The role is tasked to develop messaging and strategic communications content designed to promote the value of the AWS Startups business to external stakeholders, such as existing and prospective customers, startup ecosystem influencers, and key opinion leaders, and important internal stakeholders – our people, the AWS Startup team, a passionate and dynamic group of global leaders and ecosystem experts committed to supporting startups at all growth stages to succeed at AWS.

Key job responsibilities
As the Head of Solution Marketing, you are ready to roll up your sleeves to build a new commercially aligned storytelling function from the ground up. You are responsible for developing the AWS Startups value proposition, bringing that to life externally and internally with strategic messaging, and determining how and where we show up to tell our story to inspire, inform, and engage a variety of core audiences.

This position will work closely with multiple stakeholder groups supporting the extended AWS Startup organization, such as Sales, Business Development, Solutions Architecture, AWS Public Relations and Marketing, Startup Content Marketing, and relevant agency partners. The individual must have the ability to communicate effectively across multiple technical and non-technical business units as well as across a broad range of marketing channels and geographies.

The role is responsible for driving communications activity and assets that support the Startup Marketing team to achieve objectives including audience awareness, engagement, and preference for AWS as the best place for all startups to build and grow their businesses.

A day in the life
A key member of the Global Startup Marketing leadership team, this role partners with AWS Startup business leaders and our most inspiring startup customers to shape compelling, relevant, and strategic communications content and campaigns designed to inspire and engage key audiences both internally and externally. To do this, the role also works cross-functionally within and through a matrixed team of global and regional stakeholders and channel owners such as AWS’s Product Marketing, PR, Social Media, Blog, Podcast, and Events teams, as well as the Sales Enablement function.

In this role you will:
  • Develop a brand communications strategy and channel framework for the AWS Startup external story as well as a global execution plan
  • Develop brand communications strategy, messaging, and campaigns mapped to business objectives and work with adjacent teams to produce supporting assets for integrated roll out across AWS channels and platforms (media materials, spokesperson messaging, social content, blogs, podcast content, customer email, etc.)
  • Work with the Startups business to develop marketing communications plans to support new program launches and announcements
  • Curate and maintain global Startup messaging framework for PR teams’ usage, with regional extensions as required
  • Support media training process for key Startup executives around the world as required
  • Work with AWS startup customers and ecosystem partners to build global presence in stories and campaigns
  • Work with AWS Customer Reference team to devise new approach to assets designed to resonate with, and influence startups to choose AWS
  • Routinely measure and report out to stakeholders regarding the impact of content, programs and launches, including ownership of annual brand health report to monitor awareness and preference metrics, and gauge audience engagement
  • Use data and analytics to measure communications effectiveness and influence strategic decision-making with AWS Startup stakeholders and agency partners

    About the team
    The Startup Marketing team is responsible for all aspects of marketing aimed at making AWS the best place for any startup to start, build, scale, and succeed. This role reports into the Director of Global Startup Marketing.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 15 years’ communications experience in fields like public relations, brand marketing, executive communications, internal communications, or content marketing
  • Exceptional communication abilities – verbal, visual, and written
  • Fluent written and verbal English
  • Experience working directly with technology businesses, and developing their stories
  • Able to work cross-functionally within a matrixed international team
  • Experience media training executives and providing strategic communications counsel
  • Track record of successful delivery of large-scale communications campaigns
  • Experience working with comms stakeholders and influencers like media, industry analysts, industry associations, etc.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or relevant field of study
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles and functional complexity requirements for this role

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in or with the startup ecosystem
  • Direct experience working with regional / field teams outside of corporate headquarters
  • Preference for this position to be based in Seattle, New York City, or San Francisco.
  • Understanding of, and passion for, the startup ecosystem, and empathy for the unique needs and experiences of a founder
  • Team player who is willing to roll up their sleeves to get the job done
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and organizational skills, as well as tactical execution
  • Self-manager who can figure out what to do and make it happen, sometimes in complex and ambiguous environments

The base pay range for this position in Colorado is $170,000 - 230,000(hr/yr); however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. This information is provided per the Colorado Equal Pay Act.

The pay range for this position in New York City is $170,000 - 230,000(hr/yr); however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
