AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

AEMO’s Operational Forecasting team is responsible for short-term forecast services that feed into key operational and market processes in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). These forecasts are essential to support short-term network planning, reliability assessments and real-time operational decision-making.

Our Operational Forecasting team is recognised globally for its leadership in short-term forecasting practices. The team is looking for a Senior Analyst to expand its capability to pace with the complexity of forecasting an increasingly weather-dependent power system.

This role can be based in any capital city.

What you will be doing

You will lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of forecasting models for electricity demand, distributed photovoltaics (PV) and variable renewable energy generation to support AEMO’s real-time control centres in both the NEM and the WEM.

You will:

  • Support the operations stream lead by mentoring analysts, graduates and interns and help deliver on team priorities and technical quality.
  • Lead the development and improvement of short-term forecasts for electricity demand, rooftop PV and variable renewable generation across the NEM and WEM.
  • Work closely with AEMO’s control rooms to translate weather risks into system impacts and ensure operators have the information they need.
  • Contribute energy and weather information and insights into operational advisories, power system incident reviews, and market reports to support secure and reliable power system operations.
  • Coordinate across teams and markets to align tools, data, and forecasting processes between the NEM and WEM.

What you will bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in science, engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or a related statistical discipline.
  • Proven experience in a forecasting, operation, analytical, or market-related role.
  • Strong ability to lead, support, and mentor others, and work collaboratively across multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in high-pressure environments with evolving technical challenges.
  • Strong working knowledge of data analysis and statistical modelling techniques, including experience using tools such as SQL, Power BI, Excel, R, Python, Databricks, and forecasting platforms such as MetrixIDR or similar.
  • Experience preparing high-quality reports and presentations and communicating technical information to a broad range of stakeholders, including control room operators, market participants and senior management.
  • Clear and confident communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate technical insights into operational and stakeholder-relevant advice.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

About Our Process

At AEMO we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome people of all backgrounds, including people with disabilities and neurodivergence and those who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. If you have any accessibility requirements to support you during the application or interview process, simply let us know by emailing us at talent@aemo.com.au
