AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About the role
As a Senior Engineer in the Congestion Modelling team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of Western Australia's power system through advanced power system analysis, network modelling and constraint equation development. Supporting the secure, reliable and resilience operation of the SWIS, you will identify, assess and forecast network congestion risks arising from the rapid energy transition of the power system.
Working at the intersection of engineering and market operations, you will develop and maintain the methodologies and constraint equations that underpin secure power system operation and efficient market outcomes. Through your technical expertise and innovative thinking, you will help enable the evolution of the power system while maintaining power system security, reliability and resilience.
What you will be doing
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of network constraint equations used to manage thermal and non-thermal power system limits across the SWIS.
- Develop and maintain power system models in DIgSILENT PowerFactory to assess network performance, congestion risks and system limitations under a range of operating conditions.
- Undertake complex power system studies to identify and quantify network constraints arising from thermal ratings, voltage limitations, stability considerations and outage conditions.
- Apply data analytics and programming techniques, including Python-based tools and workflows, to improve congestion modelling processes, automate analysis and enhance modelling capability.
- Analyse network congestion trends and emerging operational challenges, providing engineering insights that inform operational, planning and market decisions.
- Deliver technical reports, engineering recommendations and data-driven insights to support power system operations, market processes and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with internal teams and industry stakeholders to ensure network constraints are accurately represented and managed across operational and planning timeframes.
- Act as a trusted subject matter expert in congestion modelling and power system limits, providing specialist advice on constraint development, network capability and power system security.
What you will bring to the role
Experience and Knowledge
- Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline relevant to power systems analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in power system operations, network modelling and analysis, with a sound understanding of electricity generation and transmission systems.
- Proficiency in industry-standard power system modelling tools and programming languages, including DIgSILENT PowerFactory and Python.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate and resolve complex technical challenges across diverse groups.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with demonstrated experience producing high-quality reports and translating complex engineering concepts for a range of audiences.
In return some of our benefits to you
- Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
- Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
- Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
- Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
- Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
