Principal Developer

Department: Digital

Division: Energy Operations Digital Systems

Reference number: 12990

Engagement type: Fixed Term Contract

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

Help shape the future of Australia’s energy markets by leading the development of critical real‑time software that underpins the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). AEMO’s Digital Division delivers the technology that supports energy system operations across all markets and jurisdictions. Within this, the WEM Market Solutions team designs, develops, and supports software that keeps WA’s power system running safely and reliably.

This includes leading development work for critical real‑time power system operation software solutions, ensuring requirements are met, and supporting readiness and transitional activities across the WA portfolio.

About the Role

As Principal Developer, you’ll provide technical leadership across major digital initiatives, guiding a team of Senior Developers and collaborating closely with business users, architects, and subject matter experts. You’ll play a key role in designing and delivering high‑availability, mission‑critical software solutions that support real‑time power system operations.

This is a hands‑on technical role ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, leading others, and shaping system design from concept to deployment.

Role responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of Senior Developers, providing direction, guidance, and technical leadership.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to translate complex requirements into scalable and secure software solutions.
  • Design, build, and enhance mission‑critical systems, ensuring reliability, performance, and adherence to best practices.
  • Participate in requirements, design, and peer‑review sessions to drive high‑quality delivery outcomes.
  • Act as a key reference point for architectural decisions and solution direction.

Experience and knowledge

  • Extensive background as a Senior Developer or Technical Lead with experience in high‑availability, mission‑critical systems.
  • Strong proficiency across modern Microsoft and web technology stacks (C#, .NET, SQL, REST APIs, JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks)
  • Experience with DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, Azure cloud services, and containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Ability to engage stakeholders, simplify complexity, and drive technical direction.
  • Bonus points for experience in energy markets, real‑time systems, or WA’s WEM Reform environment.

Education/Certificates

  • Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science and/or Engineering or equivalent.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
