AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

As an integral part of WA Operations, the WA Operations Planning team plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth, safe, and secure operation of the Southwest Interconnected System (SWIS). As a Power System Engineer, you'll be instrumental in maintaining SWIS reliability and security. You'll collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to optimise outage planning and scheduling and provide expert technical support to the WEM Real Time Operations team. Your work will directly impact the safe and efficient operation of Western Australia's power system.

You'll receive comprehensive training and full support from the team to excel in this role.

What you will be doing

  • Utilise your technical knowledge to guide and optimise short and medium term operational planning activities, ensuring a reliable and secure grid.
  • Conduct comprehensive power system security analysis for network outage planning, including load flow studies and contingency assessments, to mitigate risks.
  • Engaging with diverse stakeholders including Market Participants and Network Operator, fostering collaboration and driving positive outcomes.
  • Conduct in-depth Projected Assessment of System Adequacy calculations to assist Market Participants with outage planning

What you will bring to the role

  • A bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems, with experience in the electricity industry.
  • Understanding of power systems, including generation types, network equipment, and energy system characteristics.
  • Capability in conducting power system analysis, with expertise in load flow and contingency studies.
  • Proficiency in power system and market modelling and analysis tools like Python, eTerra, or PLEXOS. Ability to communicate technical/engineering concepts to the non-technical audience in a clear and easy to understand language.
  • Demonstrated report/technical note writing capability, verbal communication skills and effective prioritisation and time management.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
