Principal Weights Engineer
Would you like to join our Naval Architecture team and support the successful delivery of an international programme? We currently have a vacancy for Principal Weights Engineer with the flexibility to be based at any of our Naval Ships sites in the UK.
As Principal Weights Engineer you will report into the Engineering Manager - Weights and will be undertaking a defined range of engineering activities, such as generating weight estimates, analysing margins, and reporting accurate weight and centre of gravity information at the component, system, or whole ship level. You will also support the development of other members of the Weights team through checking and approving calculations and documents, addressing any issues raised and conducting line lead and mentoring activities.
You will be working with industry leading cutting-edge technology.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to join our Naval Ships Business as part of a team delivering the design for 15 Canadian Surface Combatant vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy using the BAE Systems Global Combat Ship as a basis. With the ships being built by Irving Shipbuilders in Canada, the role will support the assessment and implementation of design change to meet the Canadian requirements.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Weights Engineer will involve:
- Participating in developing, maintaining and modifying weights engineering processes and procedures specific to CSC in response to technical developments and customer requirements
- Carrying out complex weights and margins analyses to include evaluation of root causes, impacts at the system or whole ship level and preparation of material to support the articulation of those impacts to the wider customer community
- Validating Technical Equipment Specification weight budgets and monitoring and tracking those budgets
- Supporting development of the Lightship calculation and the tracking of Lightship weights and moments against available margins in accordance with weights processes
- Carrying out investigations into emergent change and developing and preparing solutions, individually or as a member of a project team
- Acting as main point of contact with external stakeholders in the weights domain on engineering matters to resolve complex problems and issues
- Carrying out team planning activities, risk management and ensuring quality across all scopes of work
- Developing the team through the Learning & Development and Performance Management processes
- Carrying out technical investigations and providing recommendations. Making engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential skills:
- Meet the requirements for registration as Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council and preferably be a member of a relevant Professional Body
- Experience in engineering and/or a defence related industry
- Experience deriving and managing weight calculations and margins
Desirable skills:
- Degree qualified, most likely in a technology, engineering, or science related discipline
- People management skills and leadership experience
- Knowledge of ship design and construction
- Experience with specialist weights related software and ship specific design and modelling packages

You have excellent communication skills allowing you to engage with all levels of stakeholders, you have a proactive collaborative approach, and you strive for continuous improvement.
Engineers at all levels should possess an academic qualification in Engineering or other related STEM subjects as well as specific (either academic or professional) qualifications and become recognised as Incorporated or Chartered Engineers through an appropriate recognised professional institution. Engineers are encouraged and will be supported to achieve the relevant accreditation. Preference will be given to candidates who are already professionally registered.

Salary: £44,850 to £50,600 depending on skills and experience
