Job Title: Technology Innovation & Futurist

Location: Remote. Must be flexible for ad hoc travel to BAE and customer sites in the UK

Salary: Up to £55,800 depending on skills and experience

The MarLabs team:

This is a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of BAE Systems Maritime & Land sector products. As a Technologist specialising in innovation & futures, you will join the MarLabs team to predict what the battlespace will look like in 2040+ in order to identify business opportunities through new creative and innovative products and services. You will have the opportunity to work with subject matter experts from within BAE Systems, external customers and academia to understand the art of what is possible.

What you’ll be doing:

• Apply technical knowledge, systems thinking, and creativity to enhance and improve BAE Systems in the pursuit of future business opportunities

• Support in achieving the ambition for MarLabs to be a ‘facilitated innovation hub’, addressing the challenges of the future battlespace to achieve Maritime & Land sector growth

• Organise, co-develop and co-deliver MarLabs events, e.g. innovation workshops, wargames, thought leadership sessions, accelerators; to help the team reach its goals and objectives

• Build a foundation of good practice to assure quality and deliver consistent, accessible MarLabs events from conception through to completion

• Engage with academics & specialists within internal and external technology organisations (defence and adjacent)

• Lead communications planning, stakeholder mapping and co-ordinate stakeholder engagement for the MarLabs team

Your skills and experiences:

• Creativity and Imagination: These two qualities are more important than deep technical knowledge. Together with your network (through facilitation), you will be able to identify, understand and suggest innovative solutions for a variety of challenges

• Breadth of Understanding: A basic understanding of the broader science and engineering related to the business’ products is desirable but not essential. Being adaptable and having confidence working with uncertainty is required

• External Engagement: Specialists & Academics. Expected to have, or able to build, a network of similar level specialists within the wider defence and adjacent community of academics (e.g. doctoral researchers), supply chain (e.g. SMEs) and customers.

• Application & Influence: One of a number of individuals who may be asked to advise on a broad spectrum of issues, provide thought leadership or guidance. Has influence on state of the art analysis and problem solving techniques

• Excellent communicator that can explain complex, uncertain topics with clarity and comfortable working alone and in a group setting (e.g. facilitating workshops, networking etc.)
