About the team

Canva is seeking a business-minded, technology focused lawyer to serve as Trust & Safety Counsel, as a member of our Product and Privacy Counsel team. We have a goal to be the most trusted platform and this role will play a key role in supporting our strategy.

The successful candidate will take an entrepreneurial approach to trust & safety advice, including counselling on matters of content moderation, user data, and account safety, and will serve as a key voice in the room providing advice to Canva’s team. You will work on many of the most critical legal issues affecting Canva’s growth and success. You will join a dynamic and global legal team working on a variety of innovative legal issues. You will be required to apply your expertise, good judgement and exceptional business sense to assist our trust & safety and content moderation teams assess and mitigate legal risk.

What you'll do

Reporting to the Head of the Product and Privacy Counsel team, act as the dedicated legal advisor for Canva’s Trust & Safety group

Guide the team on enforcement of our moderation policies and guide decision making on removal of content and termination of user accounts.

Support our moderator program, including training, cheat sheets and policies

Champion the development of the Canva Trust Centre, including information on moderation and our acceptable use policies.

Work closely with the communications and policy teams to ensure we communicate our policies with the press and our Canva community in a way that has our values front of mind and manages reputational risk.

Provide legal advice on engaging moderators internally and externally and managing the risks around creating a safe, fair and compliant work environment for them.

Work closely with our Trust & Safety team to assess and provide legal advice on content removal and access requests from governments globally

Manage our Authority Request Policy and transparency report.

Assess regional and/or local content regulations and laws, develop compliance strategies and support their implementation around the world and help Canva navigate upcoming reforms. For example, the upcoming Digital Services Act in Europe.

Provide advice to product teams on features that may require content moderation (such as designs, Canva websites and community forums) to ensure content moderation standards are in place.

Work in a cross-functional environment with our legal team, Head of Public Policy, Head of Corporate Communications, Head of User Voice and Head of Security on content moderation and content regulatory matters.

We'd love if you had

A proven technical background and significant experience in trust & safety, content moderation, content regulation and online safety.

Experience, preferably at a rapidly growing technology company or a law firm with technology clients.

Keen to roll up your sleeves, with the ability to work in a fast paced environment and find the answers if you don’t have them.

Excited about learning new technologies and new areas of law and actively seek out opportunities to do that whilst learning the Canva product and culture

Enjoy building strong relationships with product managers and engineers, as well as the legal team.

You are a collaborative team player committed to working together to achieve business goals.
