The Opportunity

This is an exciting time to join ElectraNet’s Substation Engineering team! We are expanding our capability and are seeking Experienced and Senior Substation Engineers to support the delivery and ongoing performance of South Australia’s high-voltage transmission network.

Based full time in Adelaide, South Australia, the role presents the opportunity to contribute across the full lifecycle of critical substation assets, from early concepts and detailed design through to installation, operation, maintenance and eventual disposal. You will work across multiple capital projects, solve complex engineering challenges and help ensure our substations continue to deliver safe, reliable and resilient performance.

At the Experienced Substation Engineers level, you will independently deliver specialist engineering work, prepare key technical deliverables and collaborate across projects, asset management and external delivery partners, while at the Senior Substation Engineer level, you will take on greater technical leadership, peer review and influencing responsibilities. You will help develop engineering standards and solutions, guide other engineers and contribute to continuous improvement across substation design and asset performance.

Depending on your experience and level, your responsibilities may include:

  • Preparing and reviewing engineering scopes, concept and detailed designs, technical investigations, tender assessments and contract technical specifications
  • Providing specialist engineering support across the complete lifecycle of substation primary and infrastructure systems
  • Ensuring major high-voltage plant integrates effectively with the overall substation design
  • Developing and improving functional requirements, design philosophies and engineering standards
  • Ensuring designs meet relevant safety, reliability, regulatory and ElectraNet requirements
  • Contributing to Safety in Design activities across engineering projects and operations
  • Providing technical and field support for capital projects
  • Applying lessons from completed projects, asset investigations and condition-monitoring activities to improve future performance
  • Communicating complex technical information clearly to customers, project teams, contractors and other stakeholders

Why Adelaide

More engineering professionals are discovering what South Australians have known for years: Adelaide offers the rare opportunity to accelerate your career without compromising the life you want to lead. Here, you can apply your expertise to nationally significant energy infrastructure, solve complex technical challenges and help shape the networks supporting Australia’s clean energy future.

If you have been considering an interstate move, the opportunity to make the change is now. Bring your experience to South Australia and discover why Adelaide may be Australia’s best-kept career secret.

About You

You are an accomplished electrical engineer with experience in substation primary systems, high-voltage plant or related electricity infrastructure. You bring strong technical judgement, a genuine commitment to safety and the ability to work collaboratively with engineering disciplines, project teams, contractors and stakeholders.

To be successful, you will ideally have:

  • At least 8 to 10 years' experience with whole of life function and operation of high voltage electricity transmission networks including substation primary systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Tertiary qualification of a bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience in substation primary design, high-voltage plant, infrastructure installation, commissioning or testing
  • Knowledge of substation layouts, configurations, earthing, insulation coordination, auxiliaries and associated primary engineering concepts
  • Experience preparing or reviewing primary and infrastructure design and construction specifications
  • An understanding of asset lifecycle management principles
  • An understanding of civil and structural design within a substation environment
  • Knowledge of related disciplines such as secondary systems, protection, SCADA, telecommunications and transmission lines
  • Familiarity with relevant Australian and IEC standards and electricity industry requirements
  • Strong analytical, investigation and problem-solving capability coupled with effective written and verbal communication skills
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to build productive internal and external relationships
  • Eligibility for membership of Engineers Australia
  • Chartered status with Engineers Australia, electricity industry experience, White Card training and a TAAM licence will be viewed favourably.
