About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

Purpose of the role
Strategic Policy and Legislation develops and delivers strategic policy initiatives for QFES; supports the Cabinet process and provides advice on policy and legislative initiatives from across government and their impact on QFES; manages engagement in the State Budget; coordinates support for Queensland representatives on national emergency management forums; and provides assistance across the agency on government process and whole-of-government engagement in relation to strategic policy and legislative initiatives.
Reporting to the Principal Policy Officer you will be a key member of the team, contributing and providing advice and support on strategic policy and legislation issues including: undertaking research; liaising with stakeholders; drafting briefs, submissions and correspondence; and representing agency views in external forums to ensure the department’s policy views are represented accurately and meet organisational and operational requirements.

- Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline and/or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience with demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Assist in the planning, development, implementation and overview of strategies, policies and legislation in accordance with agency requirements.
- Contribute to identifying potential risks and issues and support the development of innovative strategies and solutions that meet quality business outcomes.
- Provide advice to senior management in relation to issues effecting the department and provide options to ensure QFES meet its legislative obligation and requirements.
- Assist in the development, implementation, overview and evaluation of strategic projects that contribute to the business outcomes of the department.
- Undertake research and analysis of government policy and legislation, identify issues and/or providing recommendation for continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to assist with meeting organisational objectives and legislative requirements.
- Represent the department on committees and working groups in the development of programs, projects and policies to ensure the department’s policy views are represented accurately.
- Prepare and review reports, briefing notes, submissions, business cases and correspondence relating to policy and legislative issues and initiatives in accordance with department requirements.
