The college of Engineering, Science and Environment brings together expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to deliver life ready graduates and transformative solutions to our region and the world.
The School of Environmental and Life Sciences is committed to developing the research and teaching skills that encourage critical thinking and problem solving strategies.
This position is funded by a NSW Environmental Trust Project Grant to develop a field sensor with on-board Artificial Intelligence algorithms to detect and identify animal sounds in real-time. The grant brings together a large team of academic, industry and government partners amongst whom the candidate will work.

The candidate will be tasked with developing Artificial Intelligence algorithms to detect and categorise animal wildlife sounds under the leadership of Professor Stephan Chalup, expert in machine learning and on-board processing. A post-doctoral applicant will be expected to work more independently than a PhD level applicant.
The successful candidate will work within the University of Newcastle’s Interdisciplinary Machine Learning Research Group, the Experimental Supercomputing Lab and the Newcastle robotics lab. They will work with private engineering company SAPHI, a Newcastle-based, award-winning engineering company to deploy on-board AI processing to a field monitoring device.
This casual position with a set number of hours deployed to a contract ranging between 380-340 hours across a period of 18 months and will be located at the Callaghan Campus (Awabakal and Worimi land).

What we offer
This is HEW 6 and upward level casual position with a set number of hours deployed to a contract ranging between 380-420 h across a period of 18 months depending on the salary level. A post-doctoral applicant will be expected to work more independently than a PhD level applicant.
