We are looking for a Superintendent Mining Systems for our highly technical and mobile team to deliver the Mine Monitoring and control applications suite within the Pilbara Operations. The team manages operations IOT applications, reporting and analytical tools required to maintain our current supply chain demands with focus on the Mining Systems Applications.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced leader in the MM&C applications space or a growth opportunity for a senior mining systems engineer/specialist with a background in mine monitoring and control systems/applications to lead a dynamic team supporting of some key frontline application within Rio Tinto’s operations.

Reporting to the Manager Production and Technical Systems and working in an exciting environment where every day is different within the Mining Systems team and broader operations, you will:
- Manage the day to day frontline operational effectiveness of the mining technology applications portfolio of services within our Pilbara Operations
- Lead a team of support engineers and specialists in the application support of Mine Monitoring and Controls applications including but not limited to AHS, ADS, Fleet applications, Machine Guidance, Asset health, structural and fatigue monitoring applications.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, supporting the team in the implementation of improvement initiatives and technical advances with agile frameworks in the forefront
- Manage and Govern service providers and strategic vendor relationships to ensure they provide effective, valued, and economical service to the business
- Provides technical guidance on industry best practice “network operations centres” to optimise service delivery and costs.
- Manage Risk across the applications lifecycle for the portfolio - including cyber security risk, audit/compliance, application ‘evergreening’ eg service packs, technology upgrades, minor works to keeping applications at supported levels and reduce operational risks.
- Develop strategies and drive cost savings initiatives to maximise the value to the business through operational opportunities with application consolidation or mining improvements at the application level cross functions.
What you’ll bring
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team (standard for all job adverts)
- A tertiary degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical) or significant related industry technical experience working with I&OT with control systems or mobile MM&C disciplines (highly desirable)
- Well-developed stakeholder engagement, leadership and facilitation skills
- Multi discipline engineering experience, with the ability to define and implement project improvement initiatives to maximise reliability
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with people at all levels of the organisation
- Ability to manage a very high workload with competing deadlines guiding a team to support these deadlines
- A willingness to learn/develop and implement new technologies with the corresponding support strategies
- Ability to keep a level head in an environment that can be periodically stressful
It would be beneficial if you had any of the following:
- ITIL qualified desirable but not essential
- Experience in managing 3rd party vendors and management of contracts
- An understanding of Mine Planning tools and requirements utilised in operational reporting
- A current driver’s license
