About the role
Functional Safety is the framework used to deliver and maintain the effectiveness of critical safety functions in our technical systems, ensuring we have engineering safety controls in place and all aspects of technical, functional, and personal safety are addressed.
An excellent opportunity now exists for a passionate and curious Specialist Functional Safety Technical Governance to join our Functional Safety team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO). In this newly created role, you will be involved in the management of the functional safety governance framework and work on specific projects to improve the quality of functional safety practices across RTIO. You will have the opportunity to develop and improve processes whilst being provided with the chance to fully explore your interests in functional safety.
Reporting to the Superintendent D7 Functional Safety Projects you will:
- Coordinate all aspects of the D7 functional safety standard activities as per the Major Hazards Framework
- Manage FS metrics, reporting and KPI’s
- Coordinate the governance review process, scheduling, and action management
- Maintain competency framework, including metrics, follow up, training package reviews and coordination of ongoing training delivery
- Own FS SharePoint management and maintenance
- Coordinate scheduling for large projects
- Provide support to functional safety incident investigations, assessments, and audits
- Demonstrating the Rio Tinto values of courage, care, and curiosity

Whilst some technical FS knowledge will be beneficial it will be your excellent coordination and engagement skills, coupled with your ‘can do’ attitude, and your naturally inquisitive approach that will truly see you succeed in this role.
Qualifications in Engineering, Science, Business, or another related field will be required, and previous project management experience will be beneficial.
Collaborative in your approach, you will have the ability to engage and influence a diverse range of internal and external partners and you will also have the willingness to work outside of your core discipline. Seeking out opportunities to innovate and improve should come naturally to you.

This position is based in the Perth CBD at our Central Park office working a Monday to Friday roster. Whilst there will be a requirement for adhoc travel to our Pilbara sites, flexible working arrangements including working from home are available in this role.
