The Opportunity
The Closure business unit of Rio Tinto has been established to support the implementation of the Group’s closure strategy. The strategy seeks to take a deliberate approach to manage medium to long-term closure obligations.
We are looking for a Principal Advisor, Closure SME, to lead the design of processes, practices and tools to manage closure globally. This role will provide support and assurance over performance for projects, acquisitions, operations, and closed assets.
Reporting to the General Manager, Closure Technical Services and working in a rewarding environment within the Development and Technology broader team you will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and be accountable for the APAC region.

This role is a great opportunity for a self-motivated outcome driven individual with a strategic mindset who can influence and drive change with our stakeholders. This role will play an integral part in driving the closure group system/process. In this role you will:
- Be the Closure SME with deep technical experience in closure of mine and processing sites, , including mineral waste management, hydrology, contaminated site remediation, and /or revegetation as they relate to Rio Tinto’s sites
- Provide lead technical advice to project teams to support them with assessments, reviews and closure cost estimates. Review and analyse operating or execution approach to ensure it is supportive of the closure strategy and agreed outcomes
- Participate in closure technical reviews and provide guidance and support to develop or improve closure plans
- Conduct internal reviews of post closure management plans and methodology
- Support closure governance and assurance processes to promote compliance with standardized processes, systems, and tools
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will:
- Demonstrate knowledge and competence in closure with a focus on technical closure aspects such as hydrology, geochemistry, and /or ecology
- Ability to understand all legal, financial and operational impacts related to closure
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to make an impact and be a transformational leader
- Strong problem solving, business improvement and process design skills
- Experience with working with local and global teams
