About the team
The QLS Ethics and Practice Centre works to enhance the Society’s reputation as the trusted advisor to Queensland solicitors by advocating for good law and supporting good lawyers for the public good by the promotion and maintenance of professional standards and promoting good practice management. The Centre’s aim is to foster the professional values of fidelity, service and courage.
You will be joining an established team working collaboratively to promote ethical behaviour, professional standards and practice management support to our members. The team delivers practical legal ethics support to the profession and providing a range of practice support services to reduce professional conduct issues and risks faced by all legal practices.
About the role
The purpose of this position is to manage new and existing services, resources and initiatives in the resilience, wellbeing and workplace behaviours space (including mental illness, conflict management, bullying, sexual harassment, discrimination, organisational culture and other employment related issues) designed to meet the needs of QLS members.
Key accountabilities
- Manage existing and new services, resources and initiatives by QLS in the resilience, wellbeing and workplace behaviours space including the QLS workplace behaviours project.
- Facilitate the development, implementation and promotion of new services, resources and initiatives in this space in response to current and unmet member needs.
- Provide telephone, online and face-to-face support to legal practitioners who require guidance on resilience, wellbeing and workplace behaviour issues including the management of a hotline which will have an organisational culture aspect to it.
- Assist in the delivery of the Practice Support Consultancy Service to provide practitioners with guidance on resilience, wellbeing and workplace behaviour issues.
- Develop and implement the Accredited Locum Service designed to provide reassurance to practitioners from sole, small and micro firms that the person who will act as a locum has the appropriate skill base to manage their practice in their absence. The purpose of this initiative is to promote wellbeing in this sector of the profession.
- Develop and administer the Graduate Solicitor Telephone Guidance Service especially designed for early career lawyers.
- Work with the QLS Wellbeing Working Group, the QLS Equity & Diversity Committee and other key stakeholders to identify potential resilience, wellbeing and workplace behaviour issues in the legal profession and coordinate the implementation of appropriate initiatives.
- Collaborate with all other relevant stakeholders and knowledge owners in compiling and developing services and resources in this space, ensuring that information is accurate, contemporary and of value to members. Continually review offerings and initiatives, and implement recommendations on amendments, additions and exclusions.
- Coordinate the drafting of articles for Proctor, QLS Update, and QLS website in this space.
- Provide education on resilience, wellbeing and workplace behaviour issues as directed by the Centre’s Director.
- Undertake other duties as required to support the Centre.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement with the aim of driving innovation and profitability supported by efficient processes and systems.
- Collaborate with other teams to build the profile and depth of professional services offered by the Centre, share information and seek diverse views.
This role is full time and permanent. This position will require a reasonable amount of travel within Brisbane and regional Queensland.
Key skills and experience
- Qualifications in psychology and/or human resources (or similar fields) is a pre-requisite, as is relevant experience in a professional context.
- A qualification in law or practical experience working in the legal profession is desirable.
- Completion of the Mental Health First Aid Officer Course is desirable.
- Employment Law experience is desirable.
- Content design and delivery experience is desirable.
- Practical experience in psychology and/or human resources within the legal profession including in the organisational culture space.
- Well-developed research and analytical skills, with the ability to independently identify current and emerging issues within the legal profession to be addressed by the Centre.
- The ability to foster positive, mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders in the legal profession.
- Expert skills in scoping, prioritising and delivery of competing, deadline driven projects with consultative service delivery and understanding client needs.
- Ability to act in a highly professional and discreet manner at all times, using initiative and tact in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information.
