About the role

Reporting to the Head of Product Quality, Scientist in this role will be based on the office side of R&D, engaging in external sharing of confidential data with high value customers and is responsible internally as a scientific validation expert working across stakeholders within Abcam.

This is a high impact, high visibility, performance-driven team within Abcam. The VTQ team receives enquiries from external sources (academic and industrial customers along with collaborators and companies that OEM our products) as well as from internal labs and commercial teams sources. As a member of our team, you will design experiments to conduct and facilitate high level root-cause analysis on global product quality incidents, at both the incident level and from a strategic program-level scale, requiring the ability to switch between tactical and strategic thinking.

Each team member will spend 1-week per month monitoring the Quality Inbox email address for any time-sensitive enquiries (which may need an initial triage), and further assessment & assignment across team members for extended investigation.

This role is based in Cambridge in our Headquarter office in Discovery Drive on Addenbrookes campus , requiring a minimum of 3x days per week on-site to maximize collaboration with our key stakeholders and labs. It involves daily interaction around the Abcam global network, including the occasional flexibility for off-hours with calls on the East & West Coasts of the US and also with China.

This position has significant professional growth opportunities to gain seniority within Abcam, and provides exposure to other departments within the Company, including Senior Leadership interactions and will be of interest to skilled scientists who want is generally a to move away from bench science toward more corporate or commercial scientific roles.

This role requires collaboration and decisiveness; experimental design skills and data analysis, presentation skills and line manager potential. Your time will be spent 30% on incident level root-cause analysis and adjudicating on investigations, 20% on preparation & presentation of data and decision-making rationale to external and internal parties, 20% on strategic big-picture projects including feasibility of added up-validation and enhanced validation techniques, product non-conformity and regulatory 10% on the inbox for enquiries (one week per month), 10% on process improvement and 10% professional development.


You are comfortable and confident speaking to data with high level Pharma customers, you are decisive and consider both scientific and corporate variables in your analysis. You will have commercial or Pharma industry experience in validation/ characterization/ cell sciences in and in an areas that aligns to some of the platform categories in which Abcam publishes products; antibodies, cell lines, protein sciences, immunoassays & kits, reagents.

You will have hands-on practical or data analysis experience in the majority of these areas:

  • A thorough understanding of validation and quality control testing of antibodies including experimental design
  • Taking an evidence-based approach to determining the performance of Abcam products by analyzing data from Western Blot, IHC, ICC, IP, ELISA and Flow experiments to determine the specificity of tested products
  • Ability to compare protocols and troubleshoot experimental design to assess the specificity of Abcam products
  • Understand immunogen design and interpret antibody binding data based in this information
  • Be familiar with genomic tools to anticipate outcomes of different mutations in CrispRCas9 edits for the targeted protein expression profile
  • An understanding of antibody conjugation process would be advantageous
  • Highlight if you are familiar with LC-MS, IP-MS, UNCLE, siRNA, CHiP, Dynamic Light Scattering, HPLC
  • Highlight any background with cell science, Knockout-Knockdown validation, IPSC reprogramming and differentiation
  • You will possess these broader professional skillsets
  • A neutral, data-driven approach and an open-mind

  • The desire to work as a bridge between scientific labs and commercial teams, upstream and downstream

  • Willingness to look beyond day-to-day tasks and attack broader issues that impact the Abcam business through the lens of “quality and validation”

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD in an area of science related to the products sold by Abcam (Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular biology or Immunology)
  • 1+years of industry (non-academic) experience would be preferable
  • Intermediate to advanced EXCEL graphing

Preferred Non-Scientific Qualifications:

  • Good organizational and multitasking skills with ability to balance competing priorities
  • High comfort level with software tools and new platforms
