The Amex in a Box engineering team is building foundational technology for a globally distributed software as a service offering that we can bring to new markets quickly with superior economics. Our goal is to be able to rapidly stand up a new instance of “Amex as a service” so that the company can move quickly to seize business opportunities and outpace the competition.
We’re looking for an Engineering Director to lead the integration of dozens of the company’s technical capabilities into a Saas offering that is deployed as a single unit with a consistent user experience and standardized, modular interfaces. Our cross-functional team will span the stack, from front ends to APIs to databases, and they will have all the skills and resources they need to build, ship and operate their own software using modern languages and tools. Your work on Amex in a Box will supercharge the growth of our business for the next decade in a complex and evolving global environment. This role reports to the Vice President of Engineering for Amex in a Box.
What you’ll do:
- Partner with our directors of product management and program management to lead delivery against our core engineering roadmap
- Recruit, hire, and scale a strong engineering team, forging a culture that fosters a sense of belonging in its members and empowers them to make their own decisions about how they work
- Be a bridge between the team and the wider Amex world, synthesizing company and department priorities to provide the business context for their work, unblocking them, and facilitating cross-team collaboration
- Help the team make smart and forward-looking engineering decisions, weighing tradeoffs and avoiding counterproductive local optimizations
- Guide the growth and development of your reports, providing ongoing coaching and feedback, and helping them create opportunities for impact, visibility, and growth

You may be a fit if:
- You have professional experience as a software engineer at the senior level
- You have experience acting in an engineering leadership role, managing both people and projects
- You know how to build diverse teams to solve complex technical problems
- You are an excellent communicator, with the ability to engage, influence, and inspire others to work toward shared outcomes
- You are curious, with a drive to understand how things work and how you can make them better
- You are comfortable balancing multiple priorities and know how to make progress in ambiguous and rapidly changing circumstances
You can choose to work either fully virtually or in a hybrid configuration, coming into a technology campus regularly but infrequently (approximately 2 days out of every 2 weeks). Our teams will be distributed across the UK and the US Eastern and Central time zones.
