American Express’ Global Risk and Compliance Technology (GRCT) organization provides engineering solutions that support acceleration of the strategies of Global Compliance & Ethics, Global Operational Risk & Oversight, Global Privacy, and the Internal Audit Group. Our platforms aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of control and compliance at Amex. We play an important role in protecting the company by offering solutions to effectively identify, measure, monitor and report with a broad set of global regulations and company policies on risk management.
American Express’ Global Risk and Compliance Technology uses technology applications and data to solve problems like:
- Determining the probability, a new account is being opened for money laundering
- If an Individual or corporate account is sanctioned and should not be allowed to open an account
- How a customer wants their data to be used – Data Privacy
- What is the systemic risk at American Express?
We partner with Compliance & Ethics, Operational Risk, Privacy and Information Risk Management, and Internal Audit
Key responsibilities include:
- Actively provides leadership and deep technical knowledge, and contributes to the engineering team that will design, develop, troubleshoot, and debug work efforts for business applications (both in house components and third party platforms)
- Accountable for partnering across GRCT as well as Corporate Systems Technology and their leadership in defining and executing GRCT’s Amex in a Box journey, including data governance and data quality
- GRCT champion for Building Software the Amex Way, with a focus on inner sourcing and actively driving contribution readiness of GRCT platforms, identifying and delivering use cases, and building a strategy around it
- Partners closely with product owners for on time delivery of product roadmaps, and ongoing technology delivery of new capabilities in GRCT platforms
- Maintains continuous transparency on risks to delivery, proactively seeks and decisions options to mitigate risks
- Where required, collaborate with peers, Principal Engineers and Principal Architects to assimilate new technology and delivery methods into scalable software solutions
- Responsible for quality and metrics of platforms, including system performance, platform availability, platform scalability, operational efficiency, risk management, information security, data management and cost effectiveness
- Attract, retain, and grow top Engineering talent across the organization, providing career guidance, development, and mentorship to team members
- Cultivate an environment of Engineering excellence and continuous improvement, leading changes that drive efficiencies into existing Engineering and delivery processes
- Build platforms with standard Enterprise Architecture and frameworks

This role requires a Technical Staff Engineer to help lead the engineering transformation of the GRCT Organization. This person should have a strong background in modern application development, and technology operations for platforms with diverse tech stack.
Minimum Qualifications:
- University degree in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, or equivalent related experience required; advanced degree preferred
- Large-scale software development, ability to synergize, design and deliver platform strategy in a multi-platform environment
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, real time, microservices architecture and APIs
- Significant experience of large-scale systems design and software development, ability to synergize, design and deliver platform strategy in a multi-platform environment
- Proven knowledge of modernizing applications from mainframe to distributed is desired but not required
- Proven knowledge in big data technologies is desired but not required
- Deep understanding of distributed systems and microservices architecture
- Expertise in some of the currently used underlying technology stack and its core components is required. Current stacks in use .Net, Java, MongoDB, MYSQL, Splunk, Hive and T-SQL
- Proven knowledge of data governance and data controls
- Prior knowledge in compliance technologies is desired but not required
- Proven experience attracting, hiring, retaining, and leading top Engineering talent and building high performing teams in a highly competitive market
- Experience managing themselves and a team in a fast paced, complex, and dynamic global environment
- Outstanding influential and collaboration skills; ability to drive consensus and tangible outcomes, demonstrated by breaking down silos and fostering cross communication process Expertise in underlying technology stack and its core components
- Demonstrated results transforming software delivery performance using Dev Ops tools and mindset
- Knowledge in Big Data technologies like HiveSQL, Hadoop, Spark and big data processing paradigms
- Solid understanding of data structures, Algorithms & Design Patters
- Proven experience leading top Engineering talent and building high performing teams in a highly competitive market
- Experience with matrix organizations consisting of multi-functional teams and experience in driving large-scale change efforts
