The Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) Pricing team is responsible for the single largest source of American Express’ revenue: Merchant Discount Revenue. The team determines the optimal pricing to encourage merchant acceptance of American Express, while striving to improve coverage and merchant satisfaction. We drive GMS revenue and profit growth through customer-centric pricing principles, flexible pricing architecture and innovative pricing solutions.
The EMEA Pricing Manager – Global Client Group (GCG), leads the pricing strategy and negotiations for our EMEA merchants within GCG. This segment is significant and represents about $30B+ DBV in EMEA. This Manager will drive key pricing negotiations and initiatives aimed at preserving our merchant discount rate while balancing the organization’s goal for profitable charge volume and merchant expansion.
This role has significant exposure to senior leaders across GMS and the Blue Box. The Manager should be a dynamic individual who has strong partner management, superior analytical skills and can independently drive towards the desired outcomes.
How will you make an impact in this role?
- Lead pricing strategy development for Global Client Group (GCG) merchants in Airlines, Car Rental, Lodging and Luxury Retail based on competitive landscape, value analysis and financial impact.
- Drive merchant renegotiations by developing effective pricing proposals:
- Identifying key opportunities and challenges through quantitative analysis.
- Demonstrating external knowledge including competitor data, and regulatory developments.
- Assessing integrity of pricing proposal by running comparative analyses.
- Own the relationship with GCG Client Management through negotiations, merchant management and strategic projects.
- Lead senior leadership briefing on renegotiations and GCG policy updates.
- Liaise directly with merchants to explain Amex pricing philosophy, premium to competitor bank card rates, industry pricing, and pricing proposals.
- Drive the EMEA Discount Rate planning, forecasting and variance analysis for GCG merchants in conjunction with the Global Insights & Planning team.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of Pricing infrastructure e.g. ensuring accuracy of pricing implementation and periodic review of rates and fees.
Qualifications
- Outstanding analytical skills (Microsoft Excel); demonstrated ability to develop sophisticated financial models and draw valuable insights from large data sets
- Proven strategic thought leadership and comfort working with unstructured problems
- Excellent relationship management and collaboration skills with the ability to influence others in situations where there may be different goals
- Excellent communication skills – both written and oral -- with experience leading discussions with Senior Leaders where decisions need to be made based on the facts presented
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment, which places a premium on driving results
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple requests and prioritize accordingly
- Capacity to remain calm and flexible under pressure Creative problem solver who will challenge the status quo and embrace new thinking
- Strong project management skills with full ownership from analysis through to implementation
- Passionate focus on the customer; demonstrated desire to understand and solve for customer needs and problems
- SAS/Cornerstone skills desirable
