Enterprise Architecture as an organization aims to set the bar for technology at American Express. The four pillars of Enterprise Architecture are Architecture as Code (common frameworks/services leveraged by engineering teams across the enterprise), Architecture as Design (Major Engagements with high priority, business critical projects which need architectural guidance and support), Governance (Standards, Automated scan and score, Feedback loop and case-by-case architectural reviews) and Colleague Enablement (Mission focused Colleague development and recognition as well as enterprise outreach).

The Role:

American Express is entering into a technology transformation phase driven by opportunities to modernize legacy platforms, and explore modern software to be on the leading edge of payment card industry. This individual will architect ground breaking strategies for the payment process using the latest computing techniques driving proof of concepts with strong hands-on experience. We expect the individual to be innovative and energetic with strong communications skills to adopt the concepts into production. This individual should also have the talent and desire to deliver innovative products and services at a rapid pace, with deep hands-on experience and strategic thinking, in areas of digital, cloud native, real time, highly available and highly scalable application software. This Principal Architect position in Enterprise Architecture will be a thought-leader in the Architecture as Design pillar and structure to the disciplines of Architecture (examples: Business/Functional Architecture, Technical Architecture, Operational Architecture, etc.), promote adoption of the Enterprise Architecture Playbook, and Domain Driven Expertise & Enablement. They must have knowledge of multiple disciplines that are foundational to the Architecture as Design Pillar and drive progress towards measurable outcomes. The Principal Architect must be capable of leading MVP implementations of the Enterprise Architecture Playbook, bring domain knowledge, and be an influencer, in partnership with stakeholders.

This person must have excellent thought leadership and a strong ability to influence decisions in a matrixed organization without direct hierarchical reporting structure.

Responsibilities:

• Lead hands-on research, complex investigations and contributing to sophisticated delivery efforts
• Drive key architecture decisions to solve critical complex problems for assigned and adjacent platforms
• Work with senior level engineers, architects and platform owner to set the platform’s technical direction and strategic objectives
• Align efforts with central architecture function to influence technical standards and progress enterprise objectives
• Drive the evolution and integration of system and subsystem architecture in line with platform POA strategy
• Network with peers on technical matters, design prototypes, system designs and enterprise-wide research projects
• Work with the Company Platform Owner and senior architects to guide Technical Platform architecture and engineering teams
• Combine in-depth specialty area(s) with broad knowledge of other disciplines to deliver definitive end-to-end architectural mentorship
• Partner with business leadership to influence priorities and objectives
• Focus on driving architecture towards long-term Business Unit/Enterprise goals and objectives
• Solve novel problems that impact products and/or technologies
• Craft new techniques, methodologies, and concepts for pursuing broad cross-cutting initiatives

Minimum Qualifications:

• 12+ years of active engineering experience in a complex environment and/or comparable experience such as:
• Successful design, creation and deployment of one or more enterprise-grade technology products
• Creation and implementation of a widely used framework or set of component libraries
• Crafting a major platform and seeing it all the way into production
• Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, computer science engineering, or related field required; advanced degree preferred
• Deep knowledge and experience in areas of:
• Domain Expertise in one or more architectural specialties with broad exposure to relevant technology domains
• Domain Driven Designs
• Enterprise Architecture Best Practices
• Enterprise Architecture Playbook
• Versatility in API Design, API Lifecycle Management and Implementation, guiding data or information architecture
• Experience in creating OKRs, ROIs, and Architectural assessments
• Experience with development and governance of architecture standards, guidelines and Architecture Design Reviews (ADRs)
• Recognized as a source of unique thought leadership, influencing, collaborating, and mentoring architects and engineers across the enterprise
• Successful solution architecture implementation that impacts assigned and adjacent Company Platforms
• Direct correlation between research, recommendation, implementation and widescale impact of new technologies
• Consistent track record of in crafting fault-tolerant, scalable solution architectures that are performance at a global enterprise scale
• Proficient in crafting large-scale solutions through loosely coupled cross-platform system integration
• Experienced level solution architecture skills with wide-ranging experience; able to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
• Broad knowledge of all elements of software delivery including build, test, deployment, and operations
• SDLC Methodologies and Practices
• Programming Languages and Framework
