Amex Flex

Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite, in a hybrid model (combination of in-office and virtual days) or fully virtually. The Team

The Global Merchant and Network Services Technology (GMNST) organization at American Express is responsible for modernizing the payments network to enable next-generation payments products. The team creates flexible merchant platforms to acquire, bill, pay, service and foster innovation, while enabling a payments ecosystem to connect and authenticate parties seamlessly and securely.

American Express Payment Network platform authorizes and processes the company’s customer card transactions. The Payment Network platform is the critical back bone for American Express card transactions and is a near real-time, low latency system that is globally available and highly resilient. American Express is making strategic investments in network products and platforms to allow the company to meet its ambitious global growth agenda.

If so, we are looking for an enthusiastic, driven, and forward-thinking Technology Vice President to join us on our mission.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration with business partners to drive the strategic vision, technical design, development, and delivery of strategic initiatives across a portfolio of software products and technology platforms to ensure they meet the evolving needs of American Express and its partners.
  • Driving architectural design considerations and decisioning to ensure system scalability and resiliency.
  • Accountability for engineering delivery, quality, and operational metrics of a portfolio, including system performance, platform availability, operational efficiency, risk management, information security, data management and cost management.
  • Building a high-performing team of forward-thinking, innovative, and multi-functional Engineering Leaders to enable best in class delivery.
  • Building a culture of innovation and collaboration across teams, delivering dynamic software solutions, and inspiring change.


  • Ongoing evolution of American Express Payment Network products and platforms, adopting emerging technologies using distributed architecture.
  • Continual evolution of the strategic roadmaps and growth strategies.
  • Align organization goals with business and technology goals to ensure successful delivery of objectives and key results.
  • Clear and consistent delivery of business value and return on investment.
  • Strong performance on portfolio metrics, including high availability, resiliency, and cost management.
  • Improve productivity, quality, and delivery velocity by adopting DevOps culture and support solutions that enable continuous integration and continuous delivery to reduce time to market.


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 6+ years demonstrated senior technical leadership experience leading highly sophisticated, ambitious, multi-functional technology software teams.
  • 10+ years of hands-on engineering and/or software development.
  • 5+ years of experience delivering large-scale, complex capabilities and products; hands on engineering experience with modern tools and delivery methods (i.e., DevOps, CD/CI, Agile, etc.).
  • Experience leading large scale Agile portfolio delivery and solution integration.
  • Technical experience with, but not limited to, building high performance systems using Java/Golang, building microservices-based, large scale, cloud native distributed systems, implementing NoSQL databases and distributed messaging systems such as Redis, Kafka, Couchbase, Cassandra in the context of low latency and high transaction volume systems.
  • Experience in payments and regulatory compliance is a plus.
  • Ability to understand the strategic product roadmap (1 – 3 years) and collaborate to define architecture roadmap.
  • Ability to lead multiple priorities and rapidly guide the organization through change moments.
  • Demonstrate thought leadership to overcome challenges and inspire change.
  • Effectively deliver innovative products that link customer needs and business drivers together.
  • Perform effective code reviews and pull requests, as well as code with code etiquette.
  • Exceptional influencing and collaboration skills; ability to drive consensus and tangible outcomes, demonstrated by breaking down silos and fostering enterprise thinking.
  • Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to influence business and technology leaders at varying levels of seniority.
  • Lead with an external perspective, adopting industry change to drive cutting edge engineering and delivery solutions.
  • Experience in building high performing engineering teams.
  • Attract, retain, and develop the best engineering talent in the market; mentor and cultivate technology leadership across the organization.
  • Able to define precise, well-understood objectives and key results for the department, teams, and individuals.
