The position sits within Oncology Information Practice department a part of the Oncology Biometrics organisation. As part of a diverse global team, you will support the drug development process by providing scientific information (literature, data analytics, digital visualizations) for early-stage drug development. We also deliver information and data supporting the Oncology drug projects portfolio decisions via strategic information initiatives, applying knowledge of external environment and trends for internal information needs.
This role can be based in Macclesfield (UK), Barcelona (Spain) or Mississauga (Canada).
ABOUT THE ROLE?
You will tackle some of the most ambitious problems in natural language processing and large-scale text mining applications and apply sophisticated quantitative expertise in advanced mathematical fields to develop data science solutions. You will use foundational and ground breaking techniques to manipulate, and process structured and unstructured data, in combination with business domain knowledge, to develop and apply advanced modelling algorithms (e.g. classification, regression, clustering, NLP, graph theory and more) to generate business and scientific insights.
You will help build intelligent applications powered by knowledge graphs, embeddings and machine learning. You will be part of data scientists, machine learning and information scientists teams, creating and using tools that will advance the standard of healthcare improving the lives of millions of patients across the globe. Your work will advance our ontologies and natural language understanding tooling to capture vast quantities of biological, medical, and clinical knowledge.
Our ideal candidate will possess a blend of theoretical and practical skills in applying NLP and machine learning in a scientific environment.
You will:
Develop, implement and support modelling solutions designed to drive the interrogation of datasets for insights in scientific and business application. This includes integrating data from multiple different sources and modalities and includes the application of specialized approaches in classification, regression, clustering, NLP, graph theory and/or other techniques.
Translate unstructured, business problems into the appropriate data problem, model and analytical solutions
Research and develop predictive models and computational methods to guide decision-making within project parameters and established approaches.
Present or publish findings for conferences and in peer reviewed journals.
Build effective relationships with established range of partners to ensure utilization and value of information resources and services.
Clearly and objectively communicate results, as well as their associated uncertainties and limitations within agreed frameworks.
Provide data science support to cross-functional projects in order to complete defined solutions that drive value to AstraZeneca.
Operate in a manner which meets regulatory and evidential requirements.
Develop, maintain and apply ongoing knowledge and awareness in trends, standard methodology and new developments in analytics and data science
Implement working practices to ensure that data science work is delivered to robust quality standards and aligned to defined governance frameworks and policies
Essential Requirements
Bachelors or Master’s degree with proven experience in industry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Linguistic, Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Economics, Computational Sciences, or a related quantitative subject area
Experience in modern data science approaches, including unsupervised and supervised classification and regression algorithms such as k-means clustering, support vector machines, random forests, neural networks and deep learning.
Demonstrated knowledge in advanced statistical modelling, or broader aspects of applied mathematics such as dynamical systems or optimisation.
Understanding of algorithm design, development, optimization, scaling and applications
Demonstrated experience in NLP
Strong coding skills in Python
Experience in solving NLP problems, such as Search, NER, language generation, classification using the latest SOTA deep learning models and frameworks (hugginface, bert, pytorch, spacy)
Working knowledge of cloud environment (AWS preferred)
Ability to explain complex methods and techniques to a non-technical audience
Desirable:
Phd Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Linguistic, Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
Comfortable working in high performance computing or cloud environment
Excellent written and verbal communication, business analysis, and consultancy skills
Deep technical skills in knowledge representation, reasoning, knowledge graphs
