Make a more meaningful impact to patients’ lives around the globe

Here you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to patients’ lives. With science at its heart, this is the place where breakthroughs born in the lab become transformative medicines – for the world’s most complex diseases. Answer unmet medical needs by pioneering the next wave of science, focusing on outcomes and shaping the patient ecosystem. With our ground-breaking pipeline, the outlook is bright. Be proud to be part of a place that has achieved so much, yet is still moving forward. There’s no better time to join our global, growing enterprise as we lead the way for healthcare and society

The Center For Artificial Intelligence (CAI) is a lab focused on applying machine learning research to the toughest challenges at AstraZeneca. We are a team of experts from different disciplines including Machine Intelligence, Data Science, Real World Evidence and Bioinformatics.

We innovate together with our leading biologists, chemists, and clinicians to close the gap between today's challenges and the forefront of machine learning. If you want to have an impact on transforming patients' lives by accelerating new medicines to patients, this may be the position for you!

We are looking for a Senior Scientist, Data Scientist to join our Data Science team.

What you’ll do

In this role, you will work directly with our stakeholders across BioPharma R&D (which includes respiratory, immunology, cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, neuroscience and vaccines) to deliver insights from clinical data, and work collaboratively with other teams within the Centre for Artificial Intelligence to deliver innovative machine learning solutions.

Your work will have a significant impact by accelerating the delivery of drugs to our patients. You will work on challenges such as identifying sub-groups of patients from biomarker data, integrating external data to supplement interpretation, and leveraging innovative methodologies for interpreting clinical trial data. Your work will support activities across early and late stages of clinical development.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate extensively with other teams across the organization, with the goal of delivering products and novel insights.

This role is critical in applying research from our teams in knowledge graphs, computer vision, audio processing, big data, target identification, -omics technologies, scientific portfolio knowledge management, predictive science, precision healthcare and patient information into the challenges faced by biopharmaceutical R&D. It is expected you will present your findings to clinical and senior stakeholders and publish your findings in scientific journals and conferences.

Key responsibilities

  • Exploratory Data Analysis of clinical data using data science, machine learning and visualisation to support design and interpretation of clinical trials

  • Contribute to and apply machine learning research to challenges faced by the therapeutic areas.

  • Communicate machine learning and statistical methods and insights to various domain experts, eg: clinical teams, data scientists, senior management, statisticians, external collaborators

  • Contribute ideas and provide creative input to clinical research teams

  • Mining real world data to identify covariates of clinical risk

  • Model and simulate treatment response in clinical trial data to rank covariates of clinical response

  • Deploy novel data science methods for analyzing clinical trial data to support clinical development and regulatory submissions

    • Patient risk models

    • Counter-factual event models

    • Biomarker driven efficacy models

Essential for the role

  • B.Sc. degree in data science, computer science, life sciences, statistics or related field

  • Advanced degree (M.Sc/Ph.D. or equivalent experience) in machine learning, data science, computer science, statistics, life sciences or related field

  • 3+ years' experience as a data scientist / machine learning scientist

  • Experienced in Python

  • Track record of collaborating successfully with stakeholders and delivery of impactful datascience projects and analyses

  • Familiar with modern software engineering practices and the use of modern collaborative tools (e.g. AWS or similar, GitHub, Jira, unit testing etc.)

Desirable for the role

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in machine learning, data science, computer science, statistics, life sciences or related field.

  • Experience within the pharmaceutical industry and ability to demonstrate understanding of drug development and clinical trial process and data (all phases)

  • Experienced with clinical data standards, medical terminologies and controlled vocabularies used in healthcare data and ontologies
