About the Programme
The BioPharmaceuticals and Oncology Research & Development (R&D) Undergraduate Industrial Placement Programme provides the opportunity for you to undertake a 12-month placement that will introduce you to the world of innovative drug discovery where we push the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines. You’ll get to do meaningful work in a pioneering research and development driven organisation. As well as developing the skills, knowledge and connections that will set you up for success you will be among curious, passionate and open-minded people eager to learn, follow the science, and grow as professionals in a truly collaborative and global team.
What you can expect:
We offer 12-month placements at our Cambridge campuses in the UK, and at our Gothenburg campus in Sweden. Placement students will be hosted in one of our therapy areas or other disease areas; or across our BioPharmaceutical Development, Discovery Sciences, Antibody Discovery and Protein Engineering, or Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Sciences departments.

Data Science and AI Placements
AI, including deep learning (computer algorithms inspired by biological neural networks), is revolutionising drug discovery and development from drug design to pivotal clinical trials and beyond. You will join a multi-disciplinary community of specialists to harness the power of our data and AI to deliver life-changing medicines to patients worldwide. You will conduct hands-on data mining/machine learning projects based on specific datasets, be responsible for developing and piloting analytical tools, algorithms and methods, and will be assigned a dedicated Industrial Project Supervisor. You will have the opportunity to develop a range of transferable attributes including communication and presentation skills. You will also be given access to AstraZeneca’s early talent network and employee resource groups, and to a range of volunteering opportunities in STEM outreach and across local communities.

Data Science & AI Placement Applicants should be:
- Undergraduates studying for a numerate degree including: Maths, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or similar
- Experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biology/Chemistry, or Bio-/Cheminformatics would be advantageous, but not essential
- At the time of application, candidates should have completed at least one year of their undergraduate course
- The Industrial placement will be undertaken during the third, or potentially fourth, year of an undergraduate course
- Performing at a high level, with the potential to achieve a 1st or 2:1 class degree.
