We are looking for an expert in the field of molecular biology, to carry our protein expression and protein purification independently and unsupervised to enable delivery of target proteins to support our biotherapeutics portfolio. In this role you will employ experimental strategies to deliver project milestones and technology advancements.

Business area

Biologics Engineering is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biologics candidate drugs across all AZ therapy areas such as oncology, respiratory and inflammation, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases. We are constantly pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients, with a passion for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs.

What you’ll do

  • Design molecular biology, protein expression and purification strategies to provide key proteins to enable therapeutic biologics drugs projects

  • Apply expertise in molecular biology, protein expression and purification to facilitate the development of next generation biologics

  • Make detailed observations, analyses data, interpret results and devise solutions to complex scientific problems

  • Maintain and develop knowledge of protein expression and purification capabilities

  • Make decisions on protein supply strategies based on their own findings, the findings of others, and factors from outside the company

  • Provide support and delivery to projects through matrix working and collaboration

  • Experienced specialist in their area of expertise. Establish internal networks and collaborations within scientific field of value to the business and presents data at internal (intra- and inter-departmental) meetings

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication by establishing good working relationships with team and department members and others within the company

Essential for the role

  • BSc/higher degree with extensive lab-based experience

  • In depth knowledge and strong technical skills in molecular biology, protein expression technologies (in particular mammalian expression systems) and protein purification

  • Extensive experience in leading and troubleshooting recombinant protein delivery

  • A history of successful project delivery

  • Excellent communication, capable of developing good working relationships with individuals and experience working within a team environment

Desirable for the role

  • Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Experience with stable cell line generation to express recombinant proteins
