Hematology is central to our strategy and our vision for AstraZeneca becoming the leading company in the discovery and development of innovative medicines for cancer patients. Building on the success of Calquence (Acalabrutinib) we have crafted a stand-alone Hematology R&D team within Oncology R&D that uses our state-of-art technology platforms and deep scientific bench in various mechanisms and modalities. This team brings together all hematology projects and activities into a single group, spanning discovery, translational research, and early and late stage clinical development.
As our Senior Director, Business Planning & Operations, you will play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities and supporting the Hematology team in making a positive impact on changing patients’ lives.
This position reports to the SVP, Hematology R&D and be accountable for the development and administration for effective functioning of the Haematology Leadership Team. Overall, you will be responsible for direct support for strategic and high priority initiatives, driving operational excellence, owning process improvements, optimizing strategic planning, and building strong partnerships internally and externally. This role is will:
Work closely with the SVP Hematology and Hematology LTs to provide operational support to enhance goal clarity, engagement, and organizational efficiency, ensuring alignment of activities and key messages between Leadership Team members, ORDLT, OBULT and SET colleagues and external leaders.
- Supporting the SVP Hematology R&D in internal and external meetings, including the following:
- Planning with critical constituents and content providers to ensure clarity of scope and objectives
- Owning the compilation of appropriate briefing materials, including the coordination of the SVP Hematology presentations in partnership with scientific communications and strategy team members
- Coordinating SVP Hematology events (e.g., External speaking engagements, Town Halls), as needed with the support of the SVP Hematology Executive assistant
- Work with Hematology leadership team to set, oversee, and communicate strategy and goals (activities and budget) in close collaboration with portfolio, project and alliance management teams; leverage reporting and analytics tools to communicate results
- Build agendas for regular Hematology LTs meetings aligned to the strategic agenda and annual priorities.
- Partner with HR and communications to ensure haematology team is operating efficiently and it is seen as a great place to work
- Lead and facilitate all Hem Strategy LTs meetings, ensuring smooth running of all agenda items, decisions, activities etc
- Oversee all actions and strategic initiatives to completion, reporting back to the Hem LTs on progress as needed
- Own the development of the Hematology annual scorecard ensuring input from all LT members. Review progress with LT on a quarterly basis
- Facilitates the development of the Hematology strategy in collaboration with the ORDLT, OBULT and other senior collaborators
- In collaboration with the communication lead, develops an effective communication plan to drive the understanding of Hematology strategy within the function and externally with key partners
- Leads business and financial planning for Hematology R&D
- Support and build cross-functional relationships with key partners across the organization
- Work across AZ to oversee performance/progress across all functions that are aligned to Oncology: Early and Late Oncology Science Units, Translational Medicine, Clinical Operations, Biometrics, Chief Medical Officer, Precision Medicine, Legal and Regulatory
- Develop new and align existing partnerships across the Oncology R&D and Biopharmaceuticals R&D Units to coordinate shared resources and facilitate portfolio delivery; supports negotiation and ensures service level agreements in place for shared services
- Represents Hematology on the BPO (Chief of Staff) network across oncology to ensure coordination across ORD LT
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required
- 8+ years pharmaceutical experience
- Shaping, developing & efficiently implementing plans
- Strong organizational skills and a high degree of attention to detail
- Project and process management expertise
- Understanding of forecasts, budgets, financial processes and tools
- Understanding of the pharmaceutical business (including development)
- Cross-functional team experience
- Experience in leading through influence in a matrix organization
- Experience in strategic planning processes and tools
- Strong interpersonal, communication (written and oral), organizational, relationship building, and consulting skills
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree or PhD is preferred
- Broad experience across multiple areas of Oncology R&D development (preclinical, clinical)
- Experience in an alliance or strategic partnership
- Experience in translating business needs into a coordinated plan from cross-functional senior leadership team
- Results-orientation with ability to develop creative and simple solutions to sophisticated problems
