Genedata Biologics Research Software Engineer - Biologics Engineering, Oncology R&D
Job Type: Full time
The Biologics Engineering team is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of next generation biological drug candidates for all key therapy areas across AstraZeneca, and for developing in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs.
Central to this effort is the development of end-to-end data management and analysis capabilities to deliver novel biologics drugs. You will be part of an interdisciplinary Bioinformatics team, working at the cutting edge of research and development to create an active learning system for biologics engineering, in which model predictions guide lab experiments, lab automation generates high-throughput data for model training, and predictive models are updated as new data are generated. As part of this effort, you will collaborate closely with experts in data management, software engineering, lab automation, computational modelling and machine learning, with access to biologics R&D data across AstraZeneca and the potential to generate new data to inform predictive models.
AstraZeneca is a global, science-led, patient-focused biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialisation of prescription medicines for some of the world’s most serious diseases. But we’re more than one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.
Granta Park Cambridge, UK, is one of over 400 sites here at AstraZeneca, providing an environment where everyone feels comfortable and able to be themselves is at the core of AstraZeneca’s priorities, it’s important to us that you bring your full self to work every day. To help you maintain your best self, here’s a sneak peek into some of the things this site provides for you… Granta Park has a newly built gym with swimming pool, nursery and central food hub accessible to staff as part of the science park facilities. We also have our own bistro and deli in the AstraZeneca buildings. There are regular ‘Lunch & Learn’ events and after work socials with snacks and drinks on the last Friday of every month. This is our biggest and most spacious lab site in Cambridge…come and join us!
In the Oncology Business Unit we relentlessly follow the science to deliver more effective treatments to patients in need. Our dedication means we purposefully push back the limits of knowledge to change the practice of medicine. To ensure no patient is left behind, no matter what stage of disease. Fast-paced, it takes agility and responsiveness to stay committed in our pursuit of excellence. We work with focus to seek the unanswered questions – innovating, challenging accepted norms, quick decision-making and taking risks. A place of trust, it’s an opportunity to take accountability, be brave, speak up, step up and redefine Oncology, now and in the future. This is the time to join the team who is confident that cures for cancer are within our grasp.
What you’ll do
This role provides the opportunity for a talented and motivated research software engineer to develop end-to-end data management capabilities that will significantly impact the delivery of the novel biologics drugs of the future.
Work collaboratively with scientists across Biologics Engineering to develop end-to-end data management capabilities for biologics discovery.
Develop SQL code to configure and customise commercial Genedata Biologics software for tracking biologics discovery data from antibody screening, protein engineering and protein production.
Extend the functionality of Genedata Biologics by developing custom computational tools using its Java Software Development Kit, for data ingestion from lab instruments and for data analysis.
Collaborate with IT functions responsible for the deployment and maintenance of the live Genedata Biologics system and its integration with external databases.
Collaborate with web application developers to integrate the Genedata Biologics system with custom applications for experiment design and data analysis.
Collaborate with machine learning experts to develop an active learning system that continually trains machine learning models on data from biologics experiments and uses these data to inform subsequent experiments. Learn about leading machine learning methods for biologics design and for active learning applied to biologics experiments.
Essential for the role
A master's degree or equivalent experience in computer science or in a relevant computational field.
Experience with SQL, including configuring and querying databases programmatically.
Experience developing high-quality software in Java or a related language.
Experience with software development best practices.
