You’ll be part of the Compound Synthesis & Management (CS&M) department – a delivery focused team where we collaborate to support projects aiming to impact patients’ lives. We are responsible for the storage and timely provision of chemical compounds to AstraZeneca’s drug discovery projects. We belong in Discovery Sciences – our wider function that applies deep technical expertise in specialist technologies to support the delivery of targets and molecules to the early AstraZeneca pipeline!

What you’ll do

As a Data Scientist, you will support strategic decision making through the provision of data-driven insights. Decisions around process optimisation, sample storage and distribution policies and reduced cycle times throughout CS&M’s global footprint will be supported through data mining and analysis using, among other techniques, Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD).

You will be operating in a highly automated and data rich environment and will need to understand complex schema and how they map onto real world workflows. You will assist in the development of modern approaches to data analysis, such as business intelligence software, dashboards and visualisations, machine learning and AI etc to maintain and further develop our position as a world-leading compound management group.

Examples of typical tasks:

  • Developing in-depth knowledge of the data representation of Compound Management activities and helping to drive continuous improvements
  • Analysing large data sets and applying techniques such as data warehousing, data pipelining and data mining
  • Supporting with the design and implementation of data visualisations to provide concise information/support decision-making to operational teams, the CS&M leadership team and the research community more widely
  • Evaluating the latest technologies in computer science and assessing their suitability
  • Working closely with internal project teams in the development of unique solutions to meet customer needs
  • Achieving personal scientific visibility through project contributions, internal presentations and publications

Essential for the role

Our team is a highly collaborative group, working to tight delivery schedules, so the ability to be comfortable working at a fast, goal-oriented pace, with a team-focused approach is crucial to be successful in the role. Furthermore, you have excellent communication skills and a proactive and delivery focused approach. Whether you are a newly graduated or experienced scientist, you are passionate about your own technical and personal development and maximising your contribution.

We also believe you have:

  • A BSc/MSc in computer science/data science or related with relevant experience
  • A good knowledge of SQL
  • Experience with web technologies (e.g. HTML, Javascript & CSS)
  • Object-oriented programming experience (Java/Python)
  • Experience with data analysis and knowledge extraction
  • Strong work ethic and customer focus
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to identify and implement improvement activities
  • Passion for science, technology and innovation


  • Knowledge and experience of working in a data science role
  • Data warehousing and OLAP
  • Data visualisation (e.g. BI platforms, R/Python)
  • Cloud data storage (e.g. Snowflake)
  • Machine learning techniques
  • NoSQL/Graph database experience

AZ Cambridge

We are transitioning our group to our exciting new site, The Discovery Centre (DISC) on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and you will get an outstanding opportunity to support the move to the new site. Officially un-veiled in November 2021, by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, the DISC is our largest research and development centre in the UK, it will have more than 2,000 people working across therapy areas and drug discovery and development once fully occupied. You will start work in the AstraZeneca research building based on the Cambridge Science Park before transferring to the DISC.

What’s Next?

** Our preference is for this position to be worked on a full-time basis (36.5 hours per week) however, we would welcome applications from candidates who are seeking part-time hours, in the region of 4 days per week **
