Description:

The Global MSL Excellence Director for Oncology is accountable for ensuring the strategic alignment of MSL activities and the development, delivery and reporting of prioritised MSL Excellence initiatives to strengthen MSL capabilities across AZ regions and affiliate organisations for the Oncology Business Unit.

Working in collaboration with the OBU Medical Excellence teams, Global Medical Affairs Leaders and Field Medical Leaders to provide strategic direction, implement programmes to build Oncology-specific MSL and MSL Leader capabilities, and shape the future field medical role in Oncology.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Oncology Field Medical Leadership Team (FMLT) to ensure strategic alignment of field medical affairs activities for Oncology and oversee the strategy for MSLs, including production of Field Medical Strategic Plans (FMSPs) and reporting of activity to OBU business partners

  • Ensure alignment of field medical affairs strategy, plans and activities in partnership with Global Medical Affairs Leaders (GMALs), Oncology Medical Excellence teams and Alliance partners

  • Ensure effective collaboration with Oncology R&D and Local Markets for field medical support of AZ’s clinical development program, including driving excellence in evidence & confidence generation through the AstraZeneca prioritised clinical trial programme (‘ECLIPSE’)

  • Monitor, evaluate and report MSL activities in the context of business impact/implications, and ensure alignment with agreed global Oncology key performance indicators (KPIs) and key quality indicators (KQIs)

  • Provide robust strategic guidance and insights to the GMALs regarding the diverse needs of Field Medical worldwide, to support alignment of initiatives with company priorities

  • Act as the MSL subject matter expert to all AZ global initiatives where Oncology MSLs are implicated. Provide insight, guidance, influence and expertise that ensures global vision for MSL role is well understood

  • Understand the broader therapy area picture, and evaluate company strategy and priorities in different disease areas, to inform Field Medical strategy and Global MSL excellence activities

  • Lead the identification and promotion of innovative and scalable Global MSL Excellence initiatives across the department, and that result in valued outcomes and maximum in-country impact

  • Conduct ad-hoc analyses on projects and initiatives to proactively escalate issues, propose solutions and modify strategies

  • Use business knowledge and customer-focused ethos to drive cross-project learning, and champion and embed effective and simplified ways of working within GMSLE

Essential Requirements

  • Advanced degree in scientific discipline or applicable Health Sciences field (e.g., PhD, PharmD, MD)

  • Experience (>5 years) in an MSL organisation, preferably in Oncology, including >3 years’ experience leading/managing Field Medical teams

  • Deep knowledge of oncology therapeutic area and implications for field medical teams

  • Strong knowledge of medical strategy, clinical development, MSL, and medical affairs areas

  • Experience and ability to provide strategic leadership across functional working groups and teams

  • Strong project management skills and ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience in Global and/or Head Office Medical Affairs roles

  • Experience in MSL performance management and outcomes-based reporting

  • Design of programmes that focus on managing, leading and coaching high performing individuals and teams

  • Clear understanding of the compliance requirements and governing bodies for MSL programmes

  • Results-driven with customer-service orientation

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, and ability to influence without authority
